Dear Clients and Friends,
With the focus on the Armory and other New York art fairs this week, collectors are taking their time to pick up works by emerging and established careers at more reasonable prices.
SFMOMA's art interest group SECA is hosting a timely panel discussion on The State of the Art Fair in San Francisco on Wednesday April 1, which I have been helping to coordinate. Moderated by SFMOMA's curator of painting and sculpture, Janet Bishop, the panel of dealers, curators and journalists will address issues relevant to collectors such as buying contemporary art at art fairs in a down market. I encourage you to attend (see below for tickets and RSVP information).
Working in the art world, it's only natural
that one is drawn to the canvas. I'm honored to be following in the
footsteps of my mother, Kathy Montgomery, in her career as a painter while developing my own style. I'm
pleased to showcase some of my recent and early paintings on view at the gallery. Some are still available and I'll keep you informed of my
pending exhibition.

The State of the Art Fair SFMOMA SECA Panel Discussion: April 1, San Francisco
Art fairs are big business, the last decade has witnessed a boom in art fair attendance and art sales. SFMOMA's art interest group The Society for the Encouragement of
Contemporary Art (SECA) presents a panel discussion on The State of the Art
Fair on Wednesday, April 1st to address the relevance and issues surrounding art fairs in a down market.
SFMOMA curator Janet Bishop will lead a panel of San Francisco gallerists with extensive fair experience along with newly appointed head of SFADA in a discussion on the recent flourishing and current contraction of contemporary art fairs worldwide. The panel will also address the relationship between a dealer's in-gallery program and participation in the fairs, and the potential benefits to the collector of attending and acquiring art at fairs in a slower market. Panelists:
- Todd Hosfelt, Hosfelt Gallery, San Francisco and New York
- Claudia Altman-Siegel, Altman Siegel Gallery, San Francisco
- Marianna Stark, Executive Director, San Francisco Art Dealers Association (SFADA), publisher of www.thestarkguide.com and Co-Chair of SECA
- Janet Bishop, Curator of Painting and Sculpture at SFMOMA (Moderator)

Trudy Montgomery New Abstractions
In these recent paintings, I have been exploring color. I am drawn to strong, vibrant color, and have recently looked at how the Fauves viewed color in the early 20th Century. How do you paint light using color? If shadow is also color (and not just the absence of color), then brights become light and darks become shadows.
These abstract paintings, which you can view online, have a painterly application with visible brush strokes and impasto surface using a palette knife.
My inspiration is the landscape, viewed on my travels,
which I use as a starting point for compositions then worked out in the
studio. I've had the privilege of working along side Robin Child, of
the Lydgate Research Center in the UK, and my mother, Kathy Montgomery, an accomplished contemporary painter.

Please email us to make an appointment to view the works at our San Francisco gallery space.
