Dear Friends,
Happy holidays! We congratulate Sieglinde Van Damme, who has been invited to participate in the 2009 Florence Contemporary Art Biennale. In this issue, we highlight Sieglinde's video and print work, which explores the idea of dislocation and existing in other spaces. Read our interview with the artist online.
In November, Trudy Montgomery presented two art seminars as part of the 40th Annual ICB Open Studios in Sausalito, California. She spoke to emerging artists about 'Understanding the World of the Art Collectors' and also addressed an audience of collectors on the 'Top 10 Rules for the New Collector'. Thank you to all who attended.
The Art Basel fair opened with cautious optimism in Miami this week. After last year's 20 satellite fairs, surprisingly 22 fairs opened though with fewer dealers and some fairs closed, replaced by new ones. Please read more on Art Basel Miami Beach, below.

Sieglinde Van Damme
at the 2009 Florence Art Biennale
Blue Tangerine Art congratulates Sieglinde Van Damme who has been invited to participate in the 7th edition of the Contemporary Art Biennale in Florence, Italy, which takes place in December 2009. This is a great opportunity for Van Damme to show her work in Europe, be seen by international peers, and expose her work to a prominent international jury, which presides over the prestigious Lorenzo Il Magnifico career award. Past recipients of this award include Christo and Jean-Claude, David Hockney and Gilbert & George. In 2009 the award will go to performance artist Marina Abramovic.
Sieglinde will be presenting her video and print series in which she explores ideas of ambiguity in language and the creation of belief systems and norms within a culture. Her work is focused on the 'gray zones' in public and private notions of truth as foundation. Sieglinde translates these concepts visually through shadows, personal iconography and common objects; uniting them in an undefined non-space that is typical to her work. Sieglinde is offering a limited edition print from her photo-polymer series as a thank you to sponsors who support her expenses to attend the Biennale.
Read our interview with the artist and view her work online.

November's Artist & Collector Seminars 40th Annual Artists' Open Studios in Sausalito
Last month, Art advisor Trudy Montgomery presented two art seminars to collectors and artists. Trudy addressed an audience of collectors on strategies for building an art collection. She also spoke to a group of artists about the relationships in the art world and the nuances of managing a career.
These events were part of the 40th annual Artists' Open Studios, which opens this weekend (Dec 6- 7), in Sausalito, CA. Thank you to everyone who participated.

Spotlight on Art Basel Cautious Optimism
Art Basel Miami Beach opened this week on a quieter and more cautious note. In contrast to the frenzied buying climate of last year's fair, a to-be-expected lower turnout this year is allowing loyal and discerning collectors to enjoy a calmer environment in which to negotiate their art acquisitions.
With several of last month's auctions failing to reach their low estimates, the art market has proven itself to be risk-averse. Galleries and dealers have responded to the uncertainty by displaying 'safe' art on the more conservative end of the spectrum, leaving boundary-pushing artworks back home.
Surprisingly, given the economic climate, there are 22 satellite fairs this year; two more than in 2008. Of these, Art Miami is stronger than ever, Pulse and Scope (which has been combined in a single space with the inaugural Asian Art Fair) forge ahead. And, Red Dot has been upgraded from a hotel fair to a booth fair in the Wynwood district.
