Dear Friends,

In July, Trudy presented a seminar on the "The Art of Collecting" to a packed house at the San Francisco Design Center. More than 65 collectors, designers and artists attended the presentation on what to look for when starting, or growing, an art collection.

We feature artist Allison Hunter this month.  Hunter explores the relationship between humans and animals in her photographic renderings of animals in captivity. Shown freed from their confines in a landscape of muted colors, the viewer is left to question the circumstances of the image before them. Please go to our website to view Hunter's work and read an interview with the artist.

September is a great month to visit the museums, where many of the summer long shows are ending and new exhibitions are beginning- please see our expanded list for must see exhibitions.

We look forward to seeing you at the gallery

"Animals Behind Glass"

Allison Hunter's photographs explore ideas about humans and animals and the relationship between victim and perpetrator.  The animals are photographed in captivity and redefined in an ambiguous space.  Once a painter, Hunter began working with photographic media to more fully develop her interest in the effect of artificial and natural light and the real and imagined.   She draws our attention to the ability of the camera to "capture" its subject while at the same time freeing it through digital manipulation.

Hunter states: "My work is more about us as human animals than it is about the animals in the photographs...The backgrounds in my photographs of petting-zoo animals are computer constructed environments, which is ironic, because zoos are already these weird environments that are not natural.  They're man-made in ways that reflect our ideas of ourselves."

Hunter's photographs are both thought provoking and hauntingly beautiful images.  They remind us of the impact we have on our surrounding world and draw our attention to the sometimes forgotten victims.
