Dear Friends,

We are delighted to announce that Blue Tangerine Art is expanding. Please join me in welcoming Anne Trott who has recently joined Blue Tangerine Art to support our art consulting operations and run our San Francisco SoMA Gallery events.

This month we feature Nicola Wood's abstract series of mixed media works on canvas.
These paintings draw on Wood's early experience as a textile designer, incorporating vivid colors and making dramatic statements.

San Francisco is an art mecca this summer with the blockbuster Frida Kahlo exhibition at SFMoMA, Hans Hofmann at Berkeley Art Museum, the The Birth of the Cool: California Art, Design and Culture at Midcentury at the newly renovated Oakland Museum of California, as well as the opening of the brand new Jewish Contemporary Art Museum.

We look forward to
seeing you at the Gallery this summer.

Abstract Paintings

Nicola Wood, Abstract 10Nicola Wood's new series of abstract paintings are influenced from her early career as a textile designer in London in the 1960's.  While studying textile design at the Royal College of Art in London, Wood begain experiementing with painterly materials; she was profoundly impacted by the American pop art movement and a book called 'Art since 1945'.

"It was a terribly exciting time. Painting had seemed very ordinary up until then," explains Wood. "I developed a technique using anything I could lay my hands on including stovepipe enamel, oil paint, crayon, scratching, palette knife, sticks, watercolor dyes - you name it!"

Bringing texture, color and a boldness to this series, Wood discovered her own style of abstract painting that differs dramatically from the photorealist oil paintings of vintage automobiles and Americana that she is more widely known for.

"They've been a great success," adds Wood. "After years working as a photorealist painter, these abstract paintings recreate the freedom and exuberance of London in the '60s." See Nicola Wood's series online.

New Gallery Manager
Anne Trott joins Blue Tangerine Art

Anne Trott, Gallery Director Anne Trott joins Blue Tangerine Art from New York City where she spent the last 3 years working as Assistant Director at the Louis. K. Meisel Gallery, a preeminent gallery focusing on photorealist painting.

Prior to her gallery work, Anne spent a year at Sotheby's Auction House in New York. Anne's art education began at the University of Pennsylvania, where she studied both Political Science and Art History. In her senior year, she interned for the Institute of Contemporary Art in Philadelphia and decided to continue her studies in London.

She was accepted to the University of London, Goldsmiths College to do a Master's degree in 20th Century Art Theory where many of the now famous 'young British artists' held their first gallery show as students.  During her studies at Goldsmiths, she also worked at a small gallery in South Kensington and frequently visited the museums and galleries through out London.

Upcoming art events

Switzerland celebrated Art Basel 39 last week, the highest profile event in the art calendar year. There was a noticeable decline in American participation this year, with many dealers claiming the contemporary art market was still bubbling, buoyed by European buyers and the absence of competitive events (the UEFA soccer cup, next week or the Venice Biennial last year). This year's fair featured 300 exhibiting galleries and attracted 60,000 visitors.  Interest and attendance at the boutique satellite fairs, including Volta, Scope and Balelatina which feature work by emerging artists, was as strong as ever.

2008 Art Fair Calendar:

We look forward to welcoming you in our new gallery space in San Francisco's SoMA district. Please email us to make an appointment.

Happy Collecting!
