A Cornerstone Academy teacher who was Spring Branch ISD's 2008 Secondary Teacher of the Year won the Christa McAuliffe In Search of Excellence Award during the recent Houston West Chamber of Commerce Teacher of the Year and Business Partnership Awards Luncheon.

Two Northbrook Middle School teachers led about 20 talented Pre-Advanced Placement and Sculpture students on a field trip May 20 to Stewart Beach in Galveston, where the young people learned how to build large scale, temporary public art from members of an engineering firm.

Spark Park Support

Yellow Cab Houston donated a $5,000 check on May 19 to Spring Woods Middle School for its planned outdoor classroom Spark Park project. Installation of the outdoor park will begin soon.

New Author

A 27-year teacher who will retire soon from Sherwood Elementary School has published her first book with Scholastic, the major educational publisher. Now that she is retiring, Florence Miyamoto hopes to write more books.

Lone Star Finalist

Stratford High's student newspaper, The Oracle, has been named Best Student Newspaper by the Houston Press Club, and this publication is now a finalist for the prestigious Lone Star Award.
Language Honors
 
Foreign language honors highlighted the French Honor Society Induction on May 15, while 19 Memorial High students won medals at the 2009 National Latin Exam.
Irish Legends
 
Northbrook High graduate and assistant coach Ajani Sanders tried out for and won a position on the Irish Legends team in the Japan Bowl. He was also named Most Valuable Player during team tryouts.
