Out of the Darkness Walk

Lourdesmont will participate in the "Out of the Darkness Walk" on October 13, 2012

This fall, thousands of people from across the country will participate in one of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention's Out of the Darkness Community Walks, including one right here in Scranton, and one in Wilkes Barre.  These fundraising walks will help the Foundation fund suicide prevention and awareness initiatives, research, support programs for survivors of suicide loss and aid to reach out to those affected by mental illness.

In the U.S. it is estimated that close to one million people make a suicide attempt each year and that every 16 minutes someone dies by suicide.   Untreated depression is the leading cause of suicide and more than 19 million people suffer from depression each year.  Tragically, suicide is the fourth leading cause of death among adults aged 18 to 65 and accounts for more than 36,000 deaths each year, double that of homicide.

For more information about Out of the Darkness Walks in your community, or additional resources about suicide prevention, please go to www.afsp.org.

Fun for the Summer Partial Program at Scranton High School

The Summer Partial Program is in full swing at Scranton High School. During both the morning and afternoon sessions each week there is a planned theme with visitors from varied occupations and activities that reinforce coordinating concepts.

In July, to celebrate St. Mary Euphrasia's Birthday the program staff planned a special celebration for the students. The kids were treated to brownies and ice cream.

Wings from Kelly's Pub and Eatery made a big hit with everyone in August!   Thanks to everyone at Kelly's for donations for both programs morning and afternoon.

The month of August has quite a bit of activity planned including a Washington State themeand the kids will be creating totem poles. Another week Corporal Bachman, an officer of the Scranton Police will make a 30-45 minute presentation to students, one for the Discovery Program and one for the full Partial Program.  Finally, to wrap things up, the last week will be Pennsylvania week with an Awards ceremony at 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.

St. Mary Euphrasia's Birthday

St. Mary Euphrasia

Rose Viriginie Pelletier was born on July 31, 1796 in Noirmoutier, France. She grew up in the turbulent aftermath of the French Revolution. At the age of 18 she joined religious life and was given the name Sr. Mary Euphrasia From the Sisters of Charity of the Refuge started by St. John Eudes, she moved on and founded the Generalate which made possible the sending of the Sisters wherever they were needed. And so was born, in 1835, the international congregation of the Good Shepherd Sisters.

A woman endowed with exceptional gifts of nature and grace, she practiced all virtues to a heroic degree. With amazing zeal and courage she undertook great works that showed the compassion of the Good Shepherd, for the abandoned, the underprivileged and the lost. During her lifetime 110 foundations were opened all over the world.

She died in Angers, France on April 24, 1868 leaving to her sisters her great example, her deep love for and loyalty to Our Mother Church, as well as her God-given vision and mission to go beyond horizons. She was declared a saint on May 2, 1940 by Pope Pius XII.

The Good Shepherd Sisters continue Saint Mary Euphrasia's work of compassion, affirming to everyone that each person is precious.

UNTITLED

I'll always be beside you until the very end,

wiping all your tears and being your best friend.

I'll feel all the pain you do and I can cry a single tear.

I promise I'll cry too.

Sad, no matter what you say to me and

no matter what you do,

when you come running back when need be again,

I'll be right here waiting.

I'll take you back,

no questions asked.

TEENAGER

Being a teenager is hard from the start.

Do what you're supposed to and life will get easier

and won't fall apart.

When you're a teenager you should act your age,

not just verbally but behaviorally wise,

for people who are mature will think you're on the same page.

Being a teenager comes more responsibility, problems

and conflict that are there all the time.

Being older things are harder but if you have

a bad past it stays with you.

Just clean up your act because there is no rewind.

Just be yourself and be the best you can be.

Be patient in life and just do your best at success

and a great future is something in life

that most likely you'll see.

Wakeil B,

Honorable Mention

God Made Me

God made the moon to shine at night.

God made the birds to take off flight.

God made butterflies, flowers, and bees.

God made squirrels and big green trees.

God made you and God made me,

So Thank You God for loving me.
