News:

The Dream Team spruces up teachers' lounge at BEHS:  http://tinyurl.com/8dlob6m. The hard-working teachers at BEHS had their tired lounge made over. The new looks is warm, inviting, and more functional. The teachers are excited and also happy to have a new Keurig coffee machine. If you are looking for a way to say thanks to the teachers and staff, consider donating a box of your favorite K-Cup coffee, tea, or hot chocolate! Drop off boxes at the office with a note, or contact Mary atmnemeth@behs.com for other ways to schedule your coffee deliveries.  Teachers + Coffee  = Happiness!

Parent - Teacher Organization

WELCOME TO THE 2012-2013 SCHOOL YEAR!

The Bishop England High School Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) was thrilled to have the opportunity to assist the faculty, staff and administration in welcoming the incoming freshman class as well as our upper class transfer students and their families to the BEHS community on Thursday, August 9th. The "Meet and Greet" prior to the Orientation meeting was a wonderful kickoff to what is sure to be a great year!

PTO members previewed offerings available in the School Spirit Store as well as details of our planned fundraising and community-building events. Some of the 10th grade students, wearing "Got Questions? Ask a Sophomore" t-shirts, were on hand to share experiences and answer inquiries while our cheerleaders provided plenty of school spirit and talked up Sertoma! Information was available on the many clubs, organizations, and extra-curricular activities at school...there TRULY is something for everyone! Triple B, the school's Booster Club and fundraising arm of the Athletic Deparment, was on hand to offer information on its plans for the year and membership opportunities. Campus Ministry outlined the many ways they can help students develop friendships and grow spiritually, and our Fine Arts Department highlighted the depth and focus of the wonderful offerings in the music, art, and drama programs! A good time was had by all!

PLEASE be sure to join us in The Commons for another opportunity to mingle with parents, faculty, staff and administration on Thursday, August 30th prior to BACK TO SCHOOL NIGHT. Your PTO will be serving light refreshments from 6:15 - 7:00 pm. We will look forward to seeing you there!

The BE-Line...The Official School Spirit Store!

Make a "bee-line"... to "The BE-Line"! We are stocked and ready to help your student - and entire family - accessorize with all things BE! From school supplies to apparel, we've got it all! By supporting The BE-Line, you not only secure items to help display pride in Bishop England (and outfit your student for upcoming TAG Days), but also assist the PTO in our fundraising efforts. We help to subsidize many important initiatives at the school! Look for our table at Back to School Night on Thursday, August 30th, or download an order form from the school's website. (Go to www.behs.com and use the Relations and Welcome to the PTO tabs).

We encourage you to send orders through the office anytime! Feel free to contact Ellen Dudash at ellendudash@aol.com with questions. Go Bishops!

WE WANT YOU!

Every Bishop England family is automatically enrolled as a member of the PTO...and there is NO fee! With strong parent participation, we can truly make a difference! We have positions and tasks to fit all schedules, talents, and interests. If you haven't done so already, please complete the Volunteer Opportunity Form and return it to school via your child's homeroom ASAP! Copies of the form are available on the website, and questions may be directed to the PTO Volunteer Coordinator Lisa Doyle at ldoyle6@yahoo.com.

Google Conference

At BE, one of our goals is to use more technology to enhance our teaching. So when we heard about the Google Apps for Education South Carolina Summit to take place in Columbia last June, several teachers were very excited to sign up. The presenters at the conference explained the resources that Google, Apple, and other companies have for teachers and how to use these resources appropriately for teaching and assessing. The teachers went to a wide variety of sessions, including some on Google Docs, how to keep class blogs, how to make educational YouTube videos, how to have the students make digital portfolios, and many other topics.  These teachers learned a lot and are excited to begin using their new ideas in their classes this year.

A HUGE THANKS goes out to Helen Brandenburg, English teacher at Bishop England High School, for making a donation to the First Annual Coastal Center Cup, which was held on Saturday, August 4, 2012. The Bishop England Girls' Golf team participated in the tournament with the help from Mrs. Brandenburg's donation.

Coach Christine Ronco and Senior Alison Boyd

"The Coastal Center has been a part of our community for more than 40 years and the support it gets from the community is vital," Sandra Loy, event organizer and mother of center resident Matt Loy, said. "The mission of the Parents and Guardians Association is to ensure Coastal Center residents have a good quality of life. It raises funds for activities that are not funded by the state. Without those funds, residents wouldn't be able to enjoy activities such as movies, the fair, cook outs and holiday parties." Event organizers have decided to honor a different Coastal Center resident each year by naming him or her the featured host for the event. This year, Matt Loy served as the featured host.

The Coastal Regional Center is a state-operated residential facility for people with developmental disabilities and special needs such as cerebral palsy, seizure disorders, autism, deafness, blindness, and growth disorders. It provides some 170 residents an individualized program of specialized training and services designed to meet their needs.

The Bishop England High School campus served as the reunion site for the first Bishop England, Cathedral, and Sacred Heart (BCS) Multi-Year Reunion. This spectacular event was held on Saturday, July 28, 2012.  Marvin Porcher and Joseph A. Smith, both former students, had a vision of bringing all former students together to celebrate our schools, each other, and those who helped us along the way. Realizing the importance of what we received as students, it was very important that they gave back to the school that helped make them who they are today. Through fundraising efforts and company match programs, the BCS Multi-Year Reunion Committee was able to present Mary Nemeth with a scholarship donation in the amount of $2,120. Mrs. Nemeth was very supportive of the efforts. Her expertise was greatly appreciated as the group looks forward to working with her again in the immediate future. With friends, fond memories, lots of laughter, food, and music, the new Bishop England campus created the perfect atmosphere. Thank you to everyone who helped make this event a huge success, especially to committee members Marvin Porcher, Joseph A. Smith, Gail Holmes-Taylor, Anita Foster, Harry Holmes III, and Michelle Murray-Hairston.

Until the next time...

A great time was had by all at the 40th Reunion party for the Battling Bishops Class of 1972! Approximately 65 classmates and friends came together on August 4, 2012, at Saint Joseph's Parish Hall in Charleston to share fond memories of BEHS and re-live the good old days!

Andy Murphy, a BE graduate, would like to recognize his fellow 80 classmates from the Class of 1956. Mr. Murphy stumbled upon a Post & Courier book entitled, Our Charleston: Lowcountry Photos, People and Places - 1950s. The graduation ceremony was held at Broad Street Cathedral. During this time, there was no uniform requirement, however, a governed dress code requirement was in place. After 24 years in software development with Unisys Corporation (Blue Bell, PA), Mr. Murphy is now working for the Charleston County Public Library system as the reference manager at the Dorchester Road Regional Library near the airport. Well wishes to the BE Class of 1956!
