Locks of Love
Nine months after the initial event was publicized, students, faculty, as well as students from nearby schools participated in an event that would change the lives of so many individuals. Locks of Love, a non-profit organization, takes donated hair and makes wigs for children who suffer from a medical hair loss. Since last August, a committee of 16 young men and women from Bishop England High School had met throughout the year to organize the event by making posters, advertising in the feeder schools, and raising money with bake sales and homeroom change drives. After nine months of the publicity, 18 girls and faculty members had signed up to have their hair cut and donated. On May 4, the initial18 girls who signed up quickly multiplied to an astonishing 77 by the end of the day. The selfless acts were infectious; one haircut led to another, which led to another. With all the local publicity, 85 ponytails from women as far north as Maine will have their hair sent away to the organization.
A HUGE thanks to Alicia Taylor at Fulton Street Salon for donating your time to cut the hair, Mandy Von See from Team Candy Suckers, Daniel Jacobsohn from UNITS Moving and Portable Storage, Salon Capelli, Sarah Langdon Photography, Tumbleston Photography, to all the GIRLS in the community, and especially to those here at Bishop England High School. Thank you for making this event happen! We couldn't have done it without your LOCKS!

"I've been waiting over a year to finally do this! I'm so glad that I am able to give something to someone who needs it more than I do," says Christine Ronco, English teacher and coordinator for the Locks of Love event. "What makes me even happier is that so many young girls performed selfless acts that they should always be proud of."

Red Cross Heroes
From: Carly David and Diane Linton
Re: Red Cross Heroes
Date: May 1, 2012
Despite the economic turmoil we are all facing, there are always families with greater challenges than our own. This is especially true for those in our community who have suffered a house fire. With every devastating fire the Red Cross is the ONLY organization that immediately steps in to assist the family.
In every district, the fire chief contacts local Red Cross volunteers who actually go to the scene of the fire to put a support system in place for the victims. This happens even if it is 2:00 o'clock in the morning! ALL donations to the Red Cross Hero campaign go DIRECTLY to helping local families in need.
Two out of the last three years Bishop England has become a Red Cross Hero since we were able to donate $1500 each year. We want to thank everyone that helped make this happen; and we especially thank the homeroom students who assisted us in organizing the fund-raising events.

Mrs. Marcia Shealey, member of the B.E. faculty and close personal friend of the Skatell family, announced the winner of the Laura Hoke Skatell Community Service Award for 2012 at the Senior Awards Ceremony on Friday, May 18, 2012. This year's recipient is Katherine "Katie" Corbett.
Laura Skatell was the proud mother of three Bishop England graduates: Kristen, Class of 1999; Joey, Class of 2002; and Alex, Class of 2004. Shealways demonstrated unselfish involvement in the community and concern for those less fortunate. Although she fought cancer bravely, Laura passed away on December 30, 2003. This scholarship was established in 2004 by her friends and family to honor a Bishop England senior who also exhibits those same qualities. The winner-who received a check for $5000 along with an engraved silver bowl-is chosen by committee members who read the applications without knowledge of the applicant's name. This year's recipient shares many of the fine qualities exhibited by Laura Skatell during her short life.
Just like Laura, this year's winner will attend Clemson University and has been involved in numerous activities, such as the following: representative on class boards and on SGA, a member of the French and Key Clubs; a member of the flag football, volleyball, and basketball teams; a Red Cross ambassador and a volunteer at Summit Place; a Girls' State nominee; and a captain on the BE Girls' basketball team that led the team to its first state title in school history this year.

Spring Art Exhibit
This semester's Spring Art Exhibit was on display the last week of April. Each student enrolled in spring visual art classes participated in the exhibit. Art was on display in the C and D buildings for the week. Students, staff members and even the visiting SACS accreditation team viewed the beautiful art work displayed on art screens. On Thursday, April 26 there was a reception for students, parents, families, faculty and staff to celebrate the work of students in all levels of study. Many students were exhibiting for the first time, while other students have been part of two or three previous shows. On April 26, the halls were filled with the art students and their families, teachers and friends excited to see all of the art work. After the art exhibit was over, some students chose to display their work in the Bishop England library for an additional week.
Mrs. Johnson would like to thank all of those who were part of this event. A special thank you goes to all of the students for their hard work in preparing and dismantling their exhibit. Thank you to all faculty and staff who helped with preparation for the event and to the maintenance staff for extra help before and after the exhibit. Thank you to all parents who helped with food and donations for the reception.
Thank you to these parents who volunteered their time during the Art Exhibit Reception!
