 FROM THE COUNCIL PRESIDENT
NOW IS THE TIME!
In my last article for our newsletter I talked about The Main Thing, serving more youth with a positive, quality Scouting program. We have just finished delivering a major part of our quality program, summer camp. We had over 2,000 youth in our various camps this summer and from all reports the campers had a very positive, high quality and fun experience.
Our challenge now is to reach out in our communities to attract more youth to the Scouting program. As school begins there will be many sign up events conducted throughout the Council; in schools, churches and other gathering places. With our recruiting efforts it is very important to remember that bringing youth into our Scouting program is not just a one-time event, it is something that needs to be done on a constant, daily basis.
We are all out everyday interacting with other members of our community at ball games, races, community events, parent meetings, town meetings, etc. Each of these activities is an ideal time to talk about the great experience your youth or others have had in Scouting, at camp, den and pack meetings and troop, post or crew meetings. Sharing the fact that you are involved or have a youth involved in Scouting often opens the door for others to ask about the program, who can sign up and the cost. Many times you can turn up one or more potential Scouts by bringing up the subject of Scouting and being prepared to answer questions that people have about the program.
The Yankee Clipper Council has approximately 8,000 youth in its various Scouting programs. We have the potential for many more, at least 10,000 to 12,000. All we need to do is talk about Scouting all of the time and ask people if they or someone they know has a youth who might be interested in one of the greatest adventures a young person can experience.
And what about the rewards to all of you, the volunteers and parents that make the Scouting program work, and our communities? The rewards are simple; just think of the positive impact Scouting has on the youth in the program and the positive impact Scouts have on their communities. More youth in the program equals more youth learning and experiencing the values of doing the right thing and doing things right, and it equals a greater positive impact on our communities.
Now is the time to recruit as many youth as we can to expand our ability to deliver The Main Thing.
Thank you for your efforts and all that you do for Scouting!
Michael Jewell

BeAScout.org: Updating Your Units Google Pin
BeAScout Unit Leader Pin Update Instructions
A Step-by-Step Guide
BeAScout "Recruiting on the Web"
Put Scouting on the map with the BeAScout campaign. BeAScout will use the Web and Google Maps to recruit members. Packs, troops, and crews will appear as "pins" on Google maps nation-wide. The web site is very easy to remember www.beascout.org.
It is important that we all help in keeping our pins updated and manage inquiries so that people who are interested in Scouting get the best opportunity to join and experience Scouting.
BeAScout is easy as 1-2-3-4
1. Unit leaders publish information about their unit to a pin icon on a Google map through www.myscouting.org.
2. Parents go to www.beascout.org , submit their address, and find units in their neighborhood.
3. Leaders gather information from visits to their pins and compile "leads" that they can manage through www.myScouting.org .
4. District Executives will be able to view lead activity and status on MyBSA.
The Unit Leader's Role in setting up "BeAScout"
Unit leaders have a very important task. We want you to populate your unit's pin so that useful information shows up on the Google map. Initially, the unit leaders who can access BeAScout to set up the pin are the cubmaster, scoutmaster, or crew advisor along with the unit committee chairperson and the chartered organization representative.
Once populated, it is the unit leader's role to manage leads as they come in to contact them, explain the specifics of you unit, and invite them to a meeting to get to know the unit.
Clicking here will provide a step-by-step instructional aide on how the process works.

SEPTEMBER IS CUB SCOUTING'S FALL RECRUITMENT DRIVE!
Pack Invitation Methods to Join Cub Scouting
We challenge you to use these ideas. To use your imagination and to help us spread the excitement of the Cub Scout program. Our national research shows that a prospective family needs to hear or see information about joining Scouting at least 4 times before considering the program. Our research also shows that a parent's decision to attend a School Night for Scouting increases if they have been invited at least seven times.
Most Recommended Invitations for Scouts and Families:
- Boy Talk - This informative presentation should be 3-5 minutes in each classroom or by assembly. This is, by far, the most effective invitation method we can use.
- School Night for Scouting Flyer - These are available from the council service center. They should be given to each boy during the boy talk.
- School Night for Scouting Poster - These should be placed in strategic areas around the school at least 1 week before the School Night for Scouting date.
- School Night for Scouting Yard Sign - These should be placed near all parking lots or designated student delivery or pick-up areas. The signs should be set up a couple of days before the School Night for Scouting date.
- Cub Scout Business Cards - Print each Cub Scout a set of business cards that he can give to his friends inviting them to join the Pack at one of the join Scouting rallies. See sample in this kit.
- Follow-up Join Scouting rallies at the September Pack Meeting - Since families and boys may not attend the first School Night for Scouting due to conflicts, make sure an invitation to attend the next pack meeting is given to each boy.

Updated Annual Health and Medical Record
Rolling Out in September
An updated Annual Health and Medical Record will be available to Scouts everywhere Sept. 3. Its use will be mandated by Jan. 1, 2014.
The 2012 AHMR revision includes several noticeable changes. In an effort to support the BSA's All Markets Strategy, a bilingual format has been developed. As you know, accurate medical information is vital to keeping Scouts safe and healthy at all Scouting events. This new format will make it easier for the council and our volunteers to have a completed AHMR-as required for all participants.
In addition, information regarding the Summit Bechtel Reserve in preparation for the 2013 National Scout Jamboree and the Summit's 2014 program has been included. The early release of the revised AHMR (initially, it was planned for a December 2012 launch) will support the jamboree medical team by enabling all jamboree participants the chance to submit their medical information on the revised record as early as possible.
One other feature is a scanner-friendly Part C, a pre-participation physical that will facilitate electronically capturing key data for faster intake at large events and camps.
As always, careful planning went into the development of the updated version, with input coming from councils, volunteers, and the Health and Safety Team. These revisions do not include any changes to BSA policy and will benefit everyone in Scouting, no matter what adventure is being planned. The revisions will also be reflected in all supporting documents such as the AHMR FAQ Web page.
Once the bilingual AHMR and its supporting materials are launched Sept. 3, any older printed versions should be destroyed. For more information on the updated AHMR, please click here. Additional Information will be available on the Yankee Clipper Council's website, as it becomes available.

Advancement News:
Eagle Scout Service Project Coach Orientation
Many units, districts, and councils use Eagle Scout service project "coaches." They may or may not be part of proposal approval. Though it is a Scout's option, coaches are highly recommended-especially those from the council or district level who are knowledgeable and experienced with project approvals. Their greatest value comes in the advice they provide after approval of a proposal as a candidate completes his planning. A coach can help him see that, if a plan is not sufficiently developed, then projects can fail. Assistance can come through evaluating a plan and discussing its strengths, weaknesses, and risks, but coaches shall not have the authority to dictate changes, withdraw approval, or take any other such directive action. Instead, coaches must use the BSA method of positive adult association, logic, and common sense to help the candidate make the right decisions.
In many cases, candidates will not have undertaken something like an Eagle service project. Thus, we want them to obtain guidance from others, share ideas, seek plan reviews, and go through other processes professional project planners might use. But like a professional, the Scout makes the decisions. He must not simply follow others' directions to the point where his own input becomes insignificant. On the other hand, adult leaders must bear in mind he is yet a youth. Expectations must be reasonable and fitting.
Each District will be hosting an Eagle Scout Service Project Coach orientation as part of their September or October Roundtables. Contact your District Advancement Chairman or District Executive for more details on dates, times, and locations. This orientation is universal, so if you can't make your District's Roundtable, please be sure to check-out the other two Districts. Also a PowerPoint presentation will be posted to the Council website and available for download in late September.

2013 National Jamboree
Scouting's flagship event is one-of-a-kind. It's a gathering of approximately 45,000 Scouts, leaders, and staff that showcases everything that is great about the BSA and its members. Over the course of 10 summer days, once every four years, the Boy Scouts of America comes together. The result is the national Scout jamboree.
BE A STAFF VOLUNTEER!
The need for staff at the Jamboree and the steady progress underway at the Summit were hot topics at the recent BSA board and committee meetings held near the national office in Irving, Texas.
To learn how to register yourself or to ask your volunteers to register, take a look at the February Board Handout that circulated at the meeting.
