| The Order Of The Arrow
Troop Representative
Program
Important Information for Troop Leaders- Action Required
Alan Barlow has been appointed by Lodge Chief Kevin Doherty as the Order of the Arrow Troop Representative Chairman for Nanepashemet Lodge 158. The OA Troop Rep position is considered a leadership position by the BSA and may be used to fulfill requirements for Star, Life, and Eagle. To fulfill this requirement properly, while serving as an OA Troop Rep, the Scout must play an active role in providing communications between the Order of the Arrow Lodge and the Scout Troop.
To satisfy the position the Order of the Arrow Troop Representative is a youth serving his troop as the primary liaison to the Troop's lodge and chapter. He meets the unit's needs by providing a communication and programmatic link to and from all Arrowmen, Scouts who are not presently members of the Order, and adult leaders. These efforts are meant to assist the unit and its members in achieving the mission of the Boy Scouts of America, and at the same time fulfilling the lodge's role in the Strategic Plan of the Order of the Arrow of being an integral part of the council. By setting a good example, he will enhance the image of the Order as a service arm to his unit.
The Lodge is asking that all Troop Reps register with the Lodge. A special Lodge communications publication "Codzilla Chronicles For Troop Reps" is being prepared. To register a Troop Rep go to the Yankee Clipper Council Home page. The Troop Rep should enter his Email in the "join our mailing list block". He can sign up for as many publications as he wants but make sure that he checks OA Troop Rep Box. Once set up he will start receiving information on a regular basis.
For more information about the OA Troop Representative Position contact Alan Barlow at cowboyalan@comcast.net.\

| PHILMONT 2013!
Philmont is the pinnacle of any Scout or Venturing experience. The Boy Scouts of America's largest national high-adventure base, Philmont encompasses 137,000 acres - about 214 square miles - of rugged mountain wilderness in the Sangre de Cristo range of the Rocky Mountains in northern New Mexico. Any youth 14 or older, can be part of the 2013 Yankee Clipper Council Philmont Expedition. Reservations are being taken now for those individuals interested in what should be on every Scout or Venturers must-do list.
Why are we looking two years down the road? The expedition for 2012 has filled all 36 slots allocated, and we have a waiting list. Plus starting now allows time to raise the money to be able to participate in this experience. Start getting excited, and be one of those at the "Tooth of Time" in the summer of 2013. A picture does say 1000 words, and looking at the Philmont website conveys thousands. Plus pictures in the newsletter are courtesy of the 2011 expedition which just returned Aug 6th.
For those that would like more information on what Philmont is, and what this experience will be click on Philmont. When reviewing the options at Philmont, check the Health and Weight Standards as well as those are strictly enforced.
The 2013 dates are waiting to be confirmed, but the request is for departing July 28th and return Aug 11th, and includes 2 days touring the sites of New Mexico before arriving at Philmont on July 30th. The total cost is estimated at $1700, which includes all transportation, lodging and Philmont Trek fees. To reserve a spot send in a $100 non-refundable deposit. A payment plan starting in Sept. 2012 will be provided, and spreads the balance out from Sept. 2012 to April 2013.

Currently 24 of the 36 slots are open. If anyone over 21 wishes to attend, we still have 3-4 adult slots remaining. Priority will be given to youth after each group has two adults, but if by Aug 2012 we have remaining slots extra adults will be added. For the purposes of Philmont anyone 14 and older, but younger than 21 is considered a youth for the trek participation, that includes boys between 18-21.

DON'T BUG OUR CAMPS!
Don't Transport Firewood To Lone Tree or Wah-Tut-Ca Scout Reservation The beauty of Lone Tree and Wah-Tut-Ca face a real threat and you can help prevent destruction of our forests. The Emerald Ash Borer (EAB) beetle and Asian Longhorned Beetle (ALB) have destroyed millions of trees throughout the United States. The USDA and the Yankee Clipper Council of Boy Scouts of America are partnering to monitor and prevent these insects from destroying our camps. The EAB and ALB most likely arrived in the United States inside solid wood packing material from Asia. Since their discovery, infestations of ALB have been reported in 4 states and infestations of EAB in 13 states. There could be other undetected infestations in the country as well. Transporting wood and wood products from one location to another can spread these insects. Both Wah-Tut-Ca and Lone Tree have the types of trees these insects thrive on. Fortunately no signs of these insects have been found at either camp. We do know that they have been found as close as Worchester MA.
To protect the forest do not bring firewood from other locations to Yankee Clipper Council camps. Also wood pallets and other scrap wood are also known to transport these pests. When camping at Wah-Tut-Ca or Lone Tree only use wood that was collected at the reservations. This will greatly minimize the potential for a disastrous infestation. |

FROM THE PRESIDENT
Greetings!
I went to a friend's house for dinner a few weeks ago. I had not seen the friend since she got remarried and I had never met her new husband - Charley. Early in the evening Charley mentioned his sons were Eagle Scouts and that he had been an adult leader in another council. It didn't take long for me to learn that he knew Tom Kehoe and he had some nice things to say about Tom.
That came as no surprise to me for I have seen many good things Tom has accomplished over the past decade I have known him. I also was not surprised a few months ago when Tom Kehoe was selected as the person after which the Eagle Class of 2011 will be named. Tom will be recognized at the new Eagle Scout Recognition Dinner in February 2012. The naming tradition started a few years ago and Tom rightly belongs to this small group of distinguished Scouters.
Click here to read more about Tom Kehoe and the Eagle Class of 2011. I couldn't be more pleased to say "Congratulations Tom Kehoe". Please join me in thanking Tom for many years of distinguished service to the Scouting program.

How To Manage
BeAScout Leads!
 | | Help Kids Find Your Unit! |
There are things you can do that will make Scouting available to young people. BeAScout helps generate leads. A "lead" is someone who shows an interest in Scouting. Leads (mostly parents) look for units in their neighborhoods and then send a message to find out more about the unit. The goal of the BeAScout campaign is to turn leads into registered members. To do this, one or more people must manage the leads.
Both councils and units are responsible for managing leads. This document will explain how units can manage leads from MyScouting.
Who can manage unit leads?
From MyScouting, certain people will have access to BeAScout to manage unit pin and unit leads. They are Cubmasters, Scoutmasters, or Crew Advisors, along with Unit Committee Chairs, Chartered Organization Representatives, and the primary and alternate contacts set up in Step 1 below.
Unit Leader Tasks
Update the Pin. After July 23, all registered units will appear as pins on the Google map. Unit leaders will want to make sure that their unit information is correct on the pins. To do that, if you have the role mentioned above, log into MyScouting, select BeAScout, then Unit Pin Management. Change the "Fields Displayed on Google Pin" from Council Information to Contact Person. Then add primary and alternate unit contacts and any other unit information you want. You can also select the information to appear on the Google pin. If you don't update your pin, then only council information will show on the Google bubble.
Manage the Leads. Once you've completed Step 1, your primary and alternate contacts will be notified when a lead is interested in your unit. They must follow up with these leads. To do this, from MyScouting > BeAScout, go to Unit Lead Management. Select your unit to view the leads for that unit. All of the necessary information to contact this parent is on this page. You can view the information the lead submitted (Edit), the lead's name, address, phone, and e-mail; the date when they first made contact; questions or comments they submitted (a red flag means it needs follow up); the number of youth interested in Scouting; the status of thislead; notes that you or other people who work leads can enter (so you know what each other has done); and how they heard about Scouting.
Quality Control. Clicking on the red flag opens a box allowing an e-mail contact with the parent.
Status. Once contacted, the leader should update the Status field. The goal here is to have the Status column marked C or J. The status codes stand for: NC = Not contacted; F = Follow-up needed; C = Contacted; J = Joined.
Check your Unit Lead Management often so that no leads are neglected.

2013 National Jamboree
Scouting's flagship event is one-of-a-kind. It's a gathering of approximately 45,000 Scouts, leaders, and staff that showcases everything that is great about the BSA and its members. Over the course of 10 summer days, once every four years, the Boy Scouts of America comes together. The result is the national Scout jamboree.
A New Venue: The Summit Bechtel Family National Scout Reserve In 2009, the BSA purchased 10,600 acres of property adjacent to West Virginia's New River Gorge National River area in order to create The Summit Bechtel Family National Scout Reserve (the Summit). The Summit is the new home of achievement, adventure, and innovation in Scouting. With world-class facilities and a focus on outdoor action sports, the Summit will welcome Scouts to a whole new jamboree experience in summer 2013. High Adventure The excitement of the jamboree isn't limited to Scouts. The Summit will feature a large visitor area, where day-users can try out some of the activities that the Scouts are dialing in around other parts of the Summit. Also, 2013 will be the first year that Venturers, a branch of the BSA that includes young women, will be part of the jamboree. Whitewater rafting and kayaking, rock climbing and bouldering, and mountain biking are just a few of the activities offered at the Summit. There's also skateboarding, BMX, shooting sports, and zip-line challenge courses. And that's just the beginning. History The first Boy Scouts of America national jamboree was scheduled to be held in Washington, D.C., in 1935 to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Scouting in America. Unfortunately, the jamboree was canceled because of a polio outbreak in Washington. When the first jamboree was finally held in 1937, Dan Beard lit the opening campfire using flint and steel. Scouts from all 48 states brought the wood that was used in the campfire. There were some 27,232 Scouts camped on the National Mall under the Washington Monument. Since that time, 16 national jamborees have been held, the last in 2010. Go to 2013 Jamboree for all the 2013 National Jamboree Highlights.
