A Word from the District Superintendent | | |
"Time Away"
I have begun my three-month "Spiritual Renewal Leave". This is an opportunity that our Book of Discipline provides for District Superintendents one time while they serve as DS. I will be "away" from August 1-October 31.
This is a no-strings-attached time away from the work. Bishop Coyner encourages us as superintendents to take this opportunity. Of course, I obtained his permission for the timing of my leave.
Through my thirty years of serving UM congregations under appointment, I have never been "away" for more than a two-week vacation at one time. This three month leave is an amazing gift. Donna and I believe that it will, indeed, be a powerful time of spiritual renewal for us.
The Lord Jesus inspires us with His own practice. In Luke 5:16 (CEV), we read, "But Jesus would often go to some place where he could be alone and pray."
Each of us needs time away.
Often we are tempted to think that our work or ministry could not continue without our constant, diligent attention. Not true. Each of us needs time away to pray and rest if we are to be at our best.
In order to give my best to Jesus' work, I must follow His example and spend some time away in prayer. If Jesus did it and needed it, who am I to think that I can serve effectively without following His example?
My prayer for you is that you will find ways to be refreshed - opportunities to follow Jesus' example by regularly stepping aside from life's busyness for times of quiet prayer and rest.
Go in peace. Go with God. And be well.
Shalom,

Charles D. Wilfong
