Greetings!

It's that time of year again when the kids go back to school and everyone's schedule gets busier. With this in mind, our newsletter this month focuses on our need to pay attention to our oral hygiene at home.

Also this month, I've included useful information about preparing for the 2012 hurricane season. With a little bit of pre-planning, you can keep your family safe this season.

And, finally, to all of our students in the TDE family, "Have a Great School Year!"

"Who Cleans Your Teeth At Home?"

 Dr. Chuck Tavares Dentist

Every time I used to clean my teeth, it was not always the "Chuck the Dentist" that was holding the toothbrush or the water irrigator. Sometimes it was "Chuck the dad, or the business owner, or the traveler, or the philosopher, or the 'something'," but NOT "Chuck The Dentist."

Our minds wander don't they? Especially in the shower! We're doing one thing while thinking about another. If you've ever had a conversation while driving a car, you've experienced this. It's impossible to give 100% attention to both. The fact is, if we focused totally on driving rather than multitasking there would be fewer accidents, but that's not the case.

It's also easy to let your body go on autopilot while cleaning your teeth and begin daydreaming, thinking about work, or children, parents, or anything you're dealing with other than properly cleaning your teeth.

Each one of you have been instructed on proper dental cleaning at home. If you still have questions about what to do at home each day, please contact our office for instructions. Knowledge generally isn't the problem. It's a matter of "Who's Cleaning Your Teeth?"

If you, "the person going on vacation, running late, worried about multiple areas of your life" is cleaning your teeth, there will be much debris left, bacteria multiplying, cavities growing and gum disease worsening. Dental expenses will be higher and these events usually happen at the worse times.

If you "the person who is committed to fewer dental expenses, more comfort and keeping your teeth for your lifetime" is cleaning your teeth, your dental visits will consist mainly of preventive maintenance. There could be replacement dentistry in the future, but it can be planned in advance, avoiding unnecessary discomfort and expense.

Every morning I have to wake up "Chuck the Dentist" to make sure he's the one cleaning my teeth and not "Chuck the Dreamer." Dreams are great, but not when we're cleaning our teeth. It takes the right person.

Almost all of you have the physical and mental capability of cleaning your own teeth like you want to keep them for your lifetime and prevent the bigger problems.

In the Interest of Your Better Dental Health,

"Are You Prepared?"

We are already two months into the 2012 hurricane season and it's been an unusual start. In May, two tropical storms, Alberto and Beryl, showed up on the scene early. In June, the first official 2012 hurricane, Chris, spun out into the Atlantic ocean and tropical storm, Debby, dumped incredible amounts of rain in Northern and Central Florida. This season set a new record for the earliest-in-season 4th named Atlantic storm to date.

NOAA, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, stated that this year's conditions favor a near-normal hurricane season. "Based on the period, 1981-2010, an average season produces 12 named storms with six hurricanes, including three major hurricanes." ("NOAA predicts a near-normal 2012 Atlantic hurricane season." NOAA, May 24, 2012, www.noaa.org) NOAA has made enhancements in the agency's ability to predict and track storms by making system improvements to HWFL, the Hurricane Weather Research and Forecasting, a computer model used by hurricane forecasters. This newer software will enable forecasters to improve the tracking of a storm by 20% to 25% as well as determining the intensity of storms by 15%. This is good news but, we shouldn't let our guard down.

All families, businesses, and organizations should review and update their hurricane preparedness plans and supplies. If you haven't created a plan or haven't revised it in awhile, there's no time like the present. FEMA's website, www.ready.gov, and NOAA's website, www.noaa.org, are great resources for information. On www.ready.gov, you will find a complete blueprint including easy-to-complete forms to help you make a plan and build an emergency kit. On www.noaa.gov, you'll find up-to-date information about storms. By taking a bit of time now to plan, you'll be better prepared in a time of emergency.
