Q: What are rare earth oxides and will the current shortage affect me?     

 

A: 

Rare earth oxides are a critical part of fluorescent lighting systems and the recent shortage of these materials has had (and will continue to have) a direct and dramatic impact on phosphor availability and cost, with China controlling 97% of the world supply.  In fact, most of the major fluorescent lighting manufacturers have come out with statements stating that the price of fluorescent lamps and ballasts are going up.  They also warn that the shortage of rare earth oxides may also make wait times longer for ballasts and lamps.
