Message from Our Pastor

Dear Saints,

We have a lot to celebrate! God has been active at St. Luke!

We have been given much and received even more in Blessings! We celebrate with our young first and second graders who received First Communion on May 13, 2012:

                     Claire Decent                                    Divine Irakoze

                     Lexi Pietenpol                                   Caroline Segars

                     Brandon Walsh

We rejoiced with those who made an Affirmation of Baptism on May 20, 2012:

                     John Carter Anderson

                     Morgan JoAn Robbins

We are excited about the new ministry partnership with the YMCA of Cordova. A contract has been signed with the Cordova YMCA for a summer day camp in 2012. The camp will run from May 29 through August 3. Most of the activities will take place in the north end of the building and outside. An outdoor tent will be professionally installed on the back 40. Parking will be restricted most days in the church parking lot to ensure the safety of the campers. Plans are underway to have the YMCA campers attend St Luke's VBS program the week of June 11-15.

We give thanks for all who made the Church Picnic a success. The Fellowship ministry for cooking, Worship for providing the wonderful music, Discipleship for the kids slide and games and, of course, Property for the tents, chairs and wonderful facilities.

Pastor Ho Young Lee, a minister with the American Conference of the Korean Methodist Church has requested space to begin a Korean worship service. Our Church Council welcomed this ministry with open arms and Pastor Lee and his family were welcomed during the worship services in May. It is my hope we can support our brother in Christ as he begins the hard work of planting a Korean congregation in Cordova. We are reminded that Pastor Hood and St. Luke were aided by neighboring congregations when St. Luke was being planted.

Pastor Tiffany McClung of Peace Lutheran, Pastor Andre Johnson of Gifts of Life and I had a meeting to discuss supporting Seminarian Toni Robinson. We discussed a fund raising effort for the fall along with a joint worship service, meal and basketball tournament. We are holding the date of September 8-9 for these events. Funds would be used to allow Seminarian Toni Robinson to work part time with social ministry projects at the Peace/Gifts of Life campus and for her to preach and teach at St. Luke.

A Father's Day breakfast outside on the patio is being planned. Be sure to join the fun June 17 for an outdoor breakfast meal to honor our Fathers.

This spring we had the successful 30 hour famine fundraiser for World Vision, the Buck a Chick sale, the Malaria Campaign, and the donut sale to support McKenna Duncan on her mission trip to Argentina. God is doing some amazing ministry here at St. Luke! We have so many reasons to be thankful!

In Christ,

Pastor Cliff

A note from Pastor Lee

Dear St. Luke Church Members,

Hallelujah! I send greetings to St. Luke Church members in the name of our Lord Jesus.

Please allow me to introduce myself. I am the Rev. Ho Young Lee of Broom Tree Church. I am Korean. I am in Memphis with my wife, Sarah and lovely two daughters, Ayin and Janie. My extended family is in South Korea.

I received my radiology degree in 2000, and worked in the medical field until 2004, when I began to study theology at Methodist Theological University in Korea. I came to the United States to serve as assistant pastor of Columbus Korean Methodist Church in Columbus, Ga. I served for three years and now I have come to Memphis to start Broom Tree Church.

When I was in prayer, God gave the name Broom Tree Church to me. Elijah hid under a broom tree to avoid the eyes of Jezebel. There, Elijah cried out to God asking him to end his life, because he was experiencing so much pain and hardship. Elijah prayed, asking God to take his life, but surprisingly, God ministered to him there and raised him from broom tree.

This story shows God's love for human beings, and it is my vision for the church. Sometimes people say "I want to die," or "it's too hard to live in the world." But God wants to make wonderful things happen in the Memphis area, just as He did for Elijah.

God wants Koreans to get new life through the church, just as Elijah met God then got a new life and mission under the broom tree. I also pray this same glory will be experienced at St. Luke Church.

I thank God for leading me toward my vision. Also I really appreciate Rev. Cliff Bahlinger and all of the members of St. Luke Church.

Yours sincerely,

Rev. Ho Young Lee

Pastor Lee

"Here is a picture of our entire summer project group, along with some of the Argentine student leaders! It was taken at the Buenos Aires campus for science majors. We all got together there last Wednesday, our first full day in the country, and shared the Gospel with 40 different students. 4 students came to know Christ that day! God is doing huge things in this city!"

Update on the ELCA Malaria Campaign:

Dear Friends,

You did it! Your overwhelming generosity to the ELCA Malaria Campaign in the week after World Malaria Day exceeded our hopes and our expectations. Together, you gave over $203,000 -- enough to launch the work of the ELCA Malaria Campaign in Liberia!

The Rev. D. Jensen Seyenkulo, newly elected Bishop of the Lutheran Church in Liberia, expresses his gratitude for your gifts:

In Liberia, there is no city or village that is safe from the malaria parasite. The whole country is at risk. So the anti-malaria work of the Lutheran Church in Liberia is of utmost importance. Through your gifts to the ELCA Malaria Campaign, you have made that anti-malaria work possible.

I bring a message from your Lutheran brothers and sisters in Liberia: thank you! Thank you for walking with us as we faced civil war, disease, displacement and unemployment. Thank you for walking with us as partners in the gospel we share. And thank you for making possible the work that our church is doing to prevent, treat and educate about malaria in Liberia.

We have been working hard to get ready for these malaria programs. Our experts have studied trends and treatments of malaria. We've identified the needs in our communities and how the church, through our health care ministries, can fill them. We're ready to mobilize -- all we needed was the funding to get started. Thanks to you, our programming work can now begin. As we walk hand in hand, God will work through us to save lives.

Because of your generous gifts, Lutherans in Liberia will continue their long legacy of meeting the health care needs in their communities. We are a church that rolls up our sleeves and gets to work. You have brought us all one step closer to our goal of making malaria history. Thank you!

In Christ,

Jessica Nipp

Coordinator, ELCA Malaria Campaign

P.S. Our work in Liberia is just one example of the amazing things our church can accomplish together through the ELCA Malaria Campaign, and our work has just begun. We have a goal of raising $15 million by 2015 to support the work of our partners and companions in 12 countries in Africa. Your gifts of any size, at any time, make a difference.

Congratulations to the Kliman clan!

Harris Family

Members Kevin and Cindi Harris welcomed Landon Xavier into their family on January 5. Landon will be baptized at St. Luke on Sunday, June 10 at the 11am service.

From Jim Steadman and Family: "We deeply appreciate all of the thoughts, prayers, words of comfort and support, and floral tribute - during my mother's recent illness and passing. Although we may have been a state apart during this time, it was comforting to know that so many arms were holding us in prayer. God bless!"

News from abroad: Jill Cunningham writes that she is being re-stationed to Washington, D.C, in October. She was selected for an internship with the Chief of Navy Operations and she hopes to remain there, after her training. Wow - are we proud, or what?!

More congratulations! Grace Summers won her second Division 2-AA West Regional Tennis Singles title, in May. And, by the way, Grace, a sophomore, won against a senior! Woo-hoo! Though she didn't get beyond the first level of the state competition, she played well and has her goal in place for next year!!! Surely we've not heard the last from this young lady!

And the Tony goes to...Gasirida! This talented young lady recently played "Bird Girl" in Brewster Elementary School's production of "Seussical." She took the part because she loves to sing and she thought it would be fun. Applause, applause!

Sarah Wright sends her love and appreciation for St. Luke's hosting of her book signing. She called it a "joyful day" and we're pretty sure that went both ways! Blessings, Sarah!

More notes: Sue and Bill Parker send heartfelt thanks for St. Luke remembering them, on their anniversary. 24 years down and lots more to go!

So! Have you figured out our riddle from last month? Kurt Stavely was the best man at his parents' wedding. Here's how it worked: Kurt's parents married, had Kurt, divorced and then remarried. Yeah!

And - Patsy Sharp is directly related to Robert Morris, a signer of the Declaration of Independence.

Kudos to our own Thomas Summers, Salutatorian of St. Benedict Academy. Thomas gave an awesome commencement speech, comparing life to "Star Wars." May The Force Be With You, Thomas!

Cliff notes for June: We all need to check out our "Wellness Wheel," to make sure it's not wobbling! Our wheel is made up of physical, emotional, spiritual, intellectual, vocational, and financial goals. Balance = no wobble! The way to balance is VIM - vision, intention, and means. Make a plan, figure out how to reach the goal, and then work toward it! Oh! And if you're planning a car trip, this summer, be sure to pack a "Rosary" for Mama!

Glocal in action! Carl Fritsche, son of Paul and Shirley wrote a cantata, titled "The Holy Child" and the Light of Hope Church Youth Choir in Russia decided on performing it, so they translated the entire cantata into Russian. You can hear Carl's cantata on Youtube™.

Carl wrote: "This (performance) was a complete surprise and a complete delight."

We are so proud of Carl, like his family is! Congratulations!
