"Building Wisely, Enhancing Our Future!"

As you all know, we are embarking on another spiritual trip involving a St. Luke Capital Campaign to raise over $285,000 in an effort to glorify our Lord and Savior through improving, updating and uplifting His property given to us to maintain. The St. Luke Capital Campaign Committee is hard at work looking at the St. Luke needs for 2012 and beyond. We want to raise funds to replace the carpet in our sanctuary. We would like to replace the chews since many of them need repair but are no longer available for sale. The Capital Campaign would like to raise funds to upgrade and improve some Sunday school rooms to enable more Saints the ability to study and learn the Word of God. We want to improve and upgrade the St. Luke sign so more Germantown Road travelers find us and come in to discover the Word of God. We plan on using $50,000 of our collected funds to reduce our mortgage. Finally, the Capital Campaign seeks funds for a possible outdoor worship center on our "Back 40."

How do we accomplish our goals and raise the $285,000 over the next two years? Prayer and Participation! We must all pray for guidance, commitment and devotion. Proverbs 24: 3 & 4 tells us "By wisdom a house is built, and through understanding it is established; through knowledge its rooms are filled with rare and beautiful treasures." This verse serves the Capital Campaign as our guiding principle. St. Luke has been truly blessed with its last two capital campaigns and we believe the Good Lord will continue to bless us with this goal. On Saturday, February 18, at 6:30 PM the Capital Campaign Committee invites you to participate in a dinner presentation with a special meal prepared by our own Dirk Brakebusch where we will discuss our mission and review our plans. At this dinner we will present the Pledge Cards for the Saints' consideration.

Please complete your Communication Card at either service or contact the church office with your meal choice and your attendance at this event you will not want to miss. God bless all of the Saints and St. Luke.

Message from Our Pastor

Dear Saints,

Lent is a season of spiritual reflection in preparation for the joyous resurrection of our Lord on Easter Sunday. Lent is known as a penitential season, a time to turn from our wayward ways and return to the Lord. Lent is a time to reflect on our Lord's sacrifice and love for his people.

As in previous years, a special Lenten Discipline has been planned for us this year at St. Luke. Our goal is to have the entire congregation read the Gospel of Mark. Mark is the shortest Gospel and is very engaging and fast moving. In fact the Gospel of Mark was so short it was frequently memorized by early Christians. Each day we will provide daily reading sections with study questions for you to complete at home.

To reinforce the oral nature of the Gospel, Max McLean, a Christian artist, has memorized the 16 chapters of Mark and we will see and hear his words during our Sunday and Wednesday Lenten Services. Each Sunday and Wednesday during worship we will watch and hear as a chapter is recited, it is sure to engage you on a different level than by simply reading the text.

Maybe the most important part of our Lenten discipline will be small group study of the Gospel of Mark using a study book written by N. T. Wright. Our goal is to have a small group study for you, whether it is at home, at the church, daytime or evening, we are working to provide multiple small group opportunities for our members this Lent. Books are available for $5.00 per book; you can order books on Sunday at church, call the church office or email us at stlukememphis.org.

It may be easier to just give up chocolate for Lent, but this opportunity to study the words of Jesus with your church is a true gift. Dust off your Bible, commit a time to read God's Word daily, and engage in the study. God is calling us all to seek him. He has given us his Word, the Scripture, now is the time to read these life giving words.

St. Paul wrote, "Let the word of Christ dwell in your richly." This Lent is our time to dwell in the word, join me as we read the Gospel of Mark together as a congregation.

In Christ's Service,

Pastor Cliff

Message from Our Council President

Dear Saints,

I wanted to take this opportunity to thank you all for selecting me to serve as your Congregational President. I had the opportunity to meet with the new council in January, and we had a wonderful planning retreat. We are so fortunate to have such a hard-working and dedicated group of volunteers that serve as our Church Council and Committee Chairs. In order to serve this role, I knew I would need a great team- and we definitely have one. We spent some time in our retreat talking about goals, and each Council Rep is going to work with their individual ministries on setting goals that will enable us to reach our goals as a congregation. As a group, we pledge to do our best to represent you and work on the projects that will enable St. Luke to best serve others.

I also wanted to encourage any of you that may not be involved with a ministry to prayerfully consider joining one. Our team of volunteers does amazing work, but we want to give each of our Saints the opportunity to serve. If you have a question about a particular ministry, please reach out to Pastor Cliff, Margaret, me, or any one of our ministry leaders.

Lastly, I want to echo the sentiments of all and say what a blessing it is to have Suzy Baldwin as a part of our staff. When we interviewed her last year, I had a feeling she was going to come in and energize our Youth and Family ministry. She has definitely done that and we are so grateful to have both Suzy and Carter as a part of our St. Luke family.

On behalf our entire Church Council, thank you for this opportunity to serve you. We look forward to an exciting 2012!

In God's Peace,

Chris Carkeet

 Finance

St. Luke Financial Update

St. Luke's finances were very good last year. Current income during 2011 topped $500,000, exceeding the budget by $18,000 and surpassing 2010 income by more than $25,000. At the same time, expenses were about $15,000 below both the budget and the previous year. St. Luke had an operating budget surplus of nearly $28,000 during 2011 including income from the Shady Oaks School and a $13,000

transfer from designated funds for the youth and family ministry position. This rebuilt St. Luke's cash reserves to $90,000 (excluding $39,000 of designated funds).

A more detailed summary of St. Luke's finances can be found by logging on to the

St. Luke's website.

St. Luke Has Refinanced Its Mortgage

The Church Council approved the refinancing of St. Luke's mortgage. The new mortgage will start on Feb. 1, 2012 with a principal balance of $458,593. The interest rate will drop from 6.5% to 4.875%. Even though the length of the mortgage has been reduced to 10 years from 11 years and 4 months remaining on the old mortgage, St. Luke's monthly principal and interest payment increased only $24 to $4,837. The 1% refinancing fee was paid out of St. Luke's cash reserves, which were $90,000 at the end of 2011. The new mortgage will reduce St. Luke's interest costs by $66,000 over the life the mortgage. Even larger savings will be realized if the Capital Campaign reaches its goal of raising $50,000 to pay down the mortgage.

Mission Planning Task Force

This ministry team is formed every three years to offer a review of how we as a congregation are doing and help point us forward with future goals and ministry plans. The task force consists of Ruth Muhs, Bob Hetherington, David Rohm, Chuck LaPorte and Sharon Lehner. Pastor Cliff and Chris Carkeet (as Council President) also join in the discussions. Please feel free to offer your insights to this task force.

Outreach/Evangelism

Something to think about from your Outreach/Evangelism Ministry...

You are a part of a church family.  Because of that you have a whole circle of connections which are different from your work or social networks.  We have the power of Jesus in us because we are the Body of Christ.  We are a family with unlimited assets through Jesus Christ.  Let's use our assets to grow the Body of Christ.

We received the sweetest thank youMail bag
note from the children at Davis Cottage,

in appreciation for all the cookies we gave

them in December.  That certainly made

the effort worth it!

Another thank you! Mr. Nubar Yacoubian

was so happy with our support for his Gideon ministry.

What a great way to spread the word and it was a pleasure to have him speak to us at our December worship service.

Andrea Steadman and her family appreciated the flowers for her mother's funeral and our prayers and support.

Our own Rosemarie Cross has retired from 15-1/2 years of service at Baptist Hospital. In March, she won the Thomas Jefferson Award from the Commercial Appeal for all her years of dedicated service. What a blessing she is!

Congratulations to our Thomas Summers, who was recognized in the "Commercial Appeal" as an Academic All-Star for his passion for learning and holding a 4.5 average. He scored a 35 on his ACT and is currently ranked in the top four of his senior class of 235! Wow! He has earned the highest awards in Honors Physical Science, Latin II, Honors Latin III, AP English and Sociology, plus Excellence Awards in Latin I, Honors Chemistry, Honors Pre-Calculus, Music and Geometry. Are we done, yet? No! He also was selected for the TN Governor's School for Emerging Technologies and he has been inducted into the National Honor Society. These are just some of his accomplishments! We are so proud of you and all your hard work, Thomas!

Kudos!

Unbound By Time or Distance - - -

On a gray Sunday in January, we were treated to an afternoon that defied the natural laws of time and place. The Brass Ensemble, consisting of Brittany Betts, David Wright, Gary McPherson, Mark and Ken, took us on a journey that spanned the globe, musically. We started off with the familiar bluesy tones of "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes" and went from there to 1940 wartime London, with "A Nightingale Sang in Berkley Square." Next the ensemble paid homage to Warren Kellerhaus, with his arrangement of a Dixieland Medley, which got us dancing in our seats.

From the Big Easy, we traveled to Old Mexico and el toro led us to the bullring, with proper pomp and circumstance, featuring "Amparita Roca." Back to the Good Old USA and George M. Cohan's song album, featuring "42nd Street," "45 Minutes From Broadway" (although we felt like we were right there!), and on to "Daisy," finishing with the rousing "Yankee Doodle Dandy." The audience provided appropriate sound affects! The journey went on to hot Panama and the very sensuous "The Girl From Ipanema" and believe it or not, Brittany was actually "mute" at times...! From the tropics to American Jazz genre, where "It Don't Mean a Thing If You Ain't Got That Swing."   The trombones just shone here. Traveling to the South, we heard "Old Man River," featuring Mark on the bass trombone. Back up to Broadway with the very poignant "Send in the Clowns" by Stephen Sondheim. Out of breath, but ready to go on, we were led back to Mexico in the Mariachi tradition with "The Mexican Hat Dance," which picked up speed as time and talent went on. The ensemble slowed things down with the silvery tones of "Moonlight in Vermont" before they succumbed to the stately Latin pace of "El Condor Pasa," which was made familiar here in the States by Simon & Garfunkel.

George Gershwin made an appearance (the cherry on the top for most of us) with "Someone to Watch Over Me" and we couldn't have an American concert without some blues: "The Royal Garden Blues" brought us back once again to the South. The grand finale was a selection from the Star Wars theme, by John Williams, another American icon. Darth Vader took the final bow. What a huge afternoon for all of us and kudos to this dedicated group of wonderful musicians!

Speaking of musicians. Some of our members will remember Joy Lingerfelt, the former music director.   She now has a home-based travel business. If you'd like to get in touch with her, you can reach her at joy@fullscoretravel.com.

Visiting the Wycliffe headquarters in Orlando, Florida are some familiar faces - Janet and Ken, Jan and Gordon and Nancy and Roger!

We hope to see them soon!!

Speaking of Roger and Nancy - Their son Marty shares that his family performed in, "Fiddler on the Roof" last weekend. Heather, played the second oldest sister (Hodel), Kara, the Innkeeper/Bartender (Morecha) and Karen was the musical assistant for the play! Congratulations to all!

Thanks to all our friends who sent cards and  Fritsche Anniversary

good wishes for our 60th wedding anniversary.

How blessed we are to be among such special

and loving people as those of St. Luke.

We were so blessed to have Antionette (Tonie) Robinson as our guest speaker honoring Martin Luther King Jr. Tonie, who is a member of Peace Lutheran, is a student at Memphis Theological Seminary. This year St. Luke, through the Society Ministry Committee, is able to offer some financial support to Tonie as she pursues her ministerial degree.

Ohhh, Nooooo - Mr. Bill - don't light all those candles on that cake...! someone call 911 - Mr. Bill is on fire...Some of the Saints helped Bill Frye celebrate a significant birthday in January. We roasted him good and he (as usual) took it in stride, bless him! We love ya, bill....

Ready to Serve

Article by the Rev. Tiffany Hall McClung, Interim Pastor

Peace Lutheran Church, Memphis, TN

(she participates in the monthly Area Lutheran Pastors' meeting held here at St. Luke)

Sunday, December 25, Peace Lutheran in Memphis had a new lector!

After service on Sunday, December 18, 8th grader Amadou announced that he wanted "to read sometime."  Well, Ms. Ethel, who schedules the scripture readers for each week, jumped all over that! After church, she pulled up the lectionary, writing down the next week's scriptures for Amadou so that he could practice during the week. (I don't know who was on the schedule for the upcoming week, but Ethel decided they could wait!)

A few months ago, Amadou showed up for worship for the first time. He brought his brother, Quintarius, with him. Quintarius is in the 7th grade and we all just call him Q.  At first, I thought because their great-aunt and great grandmother (by unofficial adoption, not genetics) are members of the church, they had been brought to church by them. It took a couple of months before I knew their story, overhearing a conversation among members in which they were marveling at the fact that these boys had been out "roaming the neighborhood" one Sunday morning and decided to come into church.

Within a couple of weeks, they were bringing friends with them. Some Sundays these friends have been practically dragged out of bed to walk the three or four blocks down to the church. When they all show up, we have a group of seven young boys, all walking in ready to serve. They fight over who gets to light the candles or carry the cross and when they aren't the one serving, they are in the first pew whispering instructions. They want to be members of the church and participate in every way possible. Though they wear me out during the Sunday School hour confirmation class I teach, that class is a highlight of my week.

Most of our members are older and there aren't many of us at Peace. The last ELCA congregation remaining within the city limits of Memphis is located in a neighborhood where you are just as likely to see a drug deal on the corner as a family walking their dog.  However, Peace Lutheran Church has a history of being intentionally open to everyone. As their interim, I continue to be amazed by this "small yet mighty" group of folks, 50% Caucasian and 50% African-American where Ph.D- holding professors sit next to those who never graduated high school. Into this environment walked these boys who have been embraced, loved, and challenged by long-time Lutherans.

Amadou read the lessons beautifully on Christmas Day and each of us held our breaths with anticipation and in support of him. On Christmas Eve, "the boys" - Amadu, Q, Jaylon, Jonathon, Trent, Nicholas, and Marcio - helped with our Lessons and Carols service and then received one gift from a list of three wishes that they were invited to write down. The Church Council wanted to make sure that they receive at least one thing they desired for Christmas. Amadou wanted a Bible...can you guess what he got?

St. Luke recently sent a check to Peace/Gifts of Life to help support their ministries.
