News from Evangelist Mike Gendron
September  2012
Greetings in the Name above all names,

On a recent radio broadcast with Brannon Howse, I was asked if the Apostle's Creed is an acceptable standard for determining who is a Christian and who is not. I said the Apostle's Creed is deficient in determining the Christian faith because it does not include the complete Gospel nor does it call for repentance. Only the Gospel is the power of God for salvation to all who believe. Roman Catholics and Protestants can believe every part of the Apostle's Creed and still be lost. This is because the creed does not mention salvation by grace alone, the substitutionary atonement, or the sufficiency of Christ to save sinners completely and forever. These are important distinctions because proponents of the ecumenical movement are using the ancient creeds as a basis for unity between Catholics and Christians. To use any creed as a marker for who is a true Christian is to compromise the integrity of the Gospel and how people respond to it. One of the best messages I have heard on what it means to be a Christian - a new Creature in Christ is available here. You will also be blessed by the notes available here.

There are many who believe the Apostle's Creed but could not agree on all of the following characteristics of a Christian: One who was chosen by the Father, redeemed by the Son, born of the Spirit, justified by faith, sanctified by truth, purified by blood, saved by grace, forgiven through repentance, delivered from darkness, made alive in Christ, set free from bondage, guaranteed an inheritance, promised eternal life, protected by the Good Shepherd and called to be holy. A Christian is a member of the Body of Christ who lovingly submits to the supreme authority of Jesus and His Word. Let us all stand firm on the eternal truths of God's Word for the glory of Jesus!
Mary's Queenship Points to Jesus?
The Catholic pope has directed Catholics away from the objective Word of God as a sure guide to Jesus. Instead he proclaims the "queenship of Mary" is where we need to turn. During his Aug. 22 general audience to pilgrims, Pope Benedict XVI recommended that Christians look to the queenship of Mary, who is "queen in the service of God to humanity," as a sure guide towards her son. "Dear friends, devotion to Our Lady is an important part of spiritual life. In our prayer we should not fail to turn to her, confident that Mary will intercede for us with her Son...Looking upon her, let us imitate her faith, her complete openness to the loving plan of God, her generous welcoming of Jesus. We learn to live from Mary...Mary is continually watching over us, her children, the children who come to her in prayer, to thank her or to ask for her maternal protection and heavenly help, perhaps after having lost their way, burdened with grief or anguish amid the sad and troubled vicissitudes of life." The pope's deception is in harmony with what Cardinal Angelo Amato told attendees at the 13th International Mariological Symposium last October. He said, "For conversion to Christ you must go to the Virgin Mary so that she leads us back to Him." Read more of this deception here.
Christ Exalting, God Honoring Hymns

If you have never heard of Keith and Kristyn Getty, you are missing wonderful hymns that bring praise and honor to our triune God. They have been writing hymns for more than a decade, bridging the gap between traditional and contemporary, and creating what is described as singable theology. Their songs have pioneered a new generation of modern hymns. Here are some of the lyrics from their most popular hymn, In Christ Alone. No guilt in life, no fear in death. This is the power of Christ in me; From life's first cry to final breath, Jesus commands my destiny. No power of hell, no scheme of man, Can ever pluck me from His hand; Till He returns or calls me home. Here in the power of Christ I'll stand. The Importance of a Eucharistic Life
Whenever I read articles like the one that follows on the Eucharistic Jesus, it grieves my heart to see so many evangelical leaders embracing Roman Catholicism as a valid expression of Christianity. Either the consecrated Eucharist is the physical presence of Jesus and we need to give it due worship or the "miracle of transubstantiation" is a lying sign and wonder that Satan is using to deceive the world. There is no middle ground.

The Lord Jesus warned us, "If anyone says to you, 'Behold, here is the Christ, do not believe him'" (Matthew 24:23). Yet this is what Catholic priests proclaim each time they lift up the Eucharist. The Apostle Paul warned us that some will preach another Jesus whom the apostles never preached (2 Corinthians 11:4). Scripture gives clear evidence that the Eucharist cannot be Jesus. Since it is not Jesus, it is a false Christ. Those who worship the Eucharist are committing the most serious sin of idolatry. We know from God's Word that Jesus does not return every day in the Eucharist as an offering for sins. "He will appear a second time, not to bear sin" (Hebrews 9:28). The Bible teaches us when, where and how the second coming of Jesus will occur. The Lord will return in a physical body (the same way He ascended to heaven) to the Mount of Olives with power and great glory, after the tribulation. Every eye will see Him; there will be no question the King of Glory has returned to rule and reign on the earth! (Matthew 24:27-30; Acts 1:11).

In spite of this clear teaching from God's Word, Roman Catholic priest James Farfaglia wrote the following article.

Jesus remains with us in the tabernacle of every Catholic Church. His Real Presence is celebrated and adored in the monstrance placed in every chapel dedicated to Perpetual Adoration. He is truly with us. Every time we gaze upon him, every time Our Lord and Savior comes to us through Holy Communion, he gives us the graces that we need to put into practice his way of life so that we may gain eternal life in heaven.

Each time we come to the Eucharist, it is Jesus himself who not only shows us how to live our lives, but who also provides us with the divine grace to live out the gospel teachings in our daily existence. This is why we must have a daily Eucharistic life. Each time we have contact with our Eucharistic Lord, we become one with him. We assimilate him into our being. Holy Communion becomes a communion of two persons and thus, transformation takes place. Only the foolish and the ignorant would stay away from the greatest gift that Jesus has given to us.

Saint John Bosco once said, "Visits to the Blessed Sacrament are powerful and indispensable means of overcoming attacks of the devil. Make frequent visits to Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament and the devil will be powerless against you." Center your life on the awesome gift of the Eucharist. Read full article here.
Adam and Eve a Myth Says Catholic Cardinal
Roman Catholic Cardinal George Pell has described the biblical story of Adam and Eve as a myth. He recently appeared alongside renowned evolutionary biologist and atheist, Professor Richard Dawkins, on the ABC's Q&A program. Cardinal Pell said the existence of Adam and Eve was not a matter of science but rather a mythological account. "It's a very sophisticated mythology to try to explain the evil and the suffering in the world," he said.

According to Genesis, God created Adam and Eve as the first man and woman and all people are descended from them. Cardinal Pell's explosive comments came after he was questioned about evolution. He said it was impossible to say when there was a first human. It is widely accepted in the scientific community that life on Earth has evolved over about four billion years. See article here.
 Letters from Around the World
Letters

Your book Preparing for Eternity confirmed that we made the correct decision to leave the Roman Church. We originally left the RC Church about 5 years ago but because of our long term service as Eucharistic ministers, our monsignor talked us back. It didn't change anything about the way we had come to believe, however, we were still enslaved by all the Catholic dogmas you cited in your book. How I anguished in thinking I wasn't saved. Mike, here's the two sentences that jumped out at me in your book: "We recognize there are some Christians who may be attending the Catholic Church, but if they have repented and believed the Gospel, they are no longer Catholics. The Holy Spirit will eventually lead them out to worship God in spirit and truth!" Finally, I was horrified by the letters of hate and closed mindedness from Catholics in your book. My question is, has any good work done for Jesus through the RC Church count for anything? God bless you! R. and B. O., Hawthorne, NJ

Regarding your question on works. Only some of the works done after justification are intrinsically good and acceptable to God. All the works of a Christian will be tested by fire. The good works, described by Paul, as gold, silver and precious stones, will survive the fire and result in rewards at the Bema seat. They are works done in faith, motivated by a love of God, in obedience to the will of God and for His glory. The worthless works, described as wood, hay and straw will be burned up, and the believer shall suffer the loss of rewards (1 Cor. 3:12-15).

Following are four tests for good works: the timing of the works - they must be done after justification, not before (Eph. 2:10; Phil. 2:12; 1 Thes. 1:3). the motivation for the works -they must be done in thanksgiving for being saved, not to merit salvation (1 Cor. 6:20; 1 Thes. 5:18; Jn. 14:21); the power in which the works are accomplished - trusting God's power, not the power of the flesh (Jn.15:5; Rom. 15:13, Phil. 2:12-13; Col. 1:29; 2 Thes. 1:11; Heb. 11:6); and the glory produced by the works - they must glorify God, not man (Acts 4:21; Mat. 5:16; Jn. 15:8; 1 Cor. 10:31; 1 Pet. 2:12).

Worthless works will fail all or some of these tests. They include all works done as unbelievers, as well as works done after justification that either seek to earn God's favor or man's glory. Consider Jesus's rebuke of the Pharisees: "they do all their deeds to be noticed by men" (Mat. 23:5). There are also those who "profess to know God, but by their deeds they deny Him, being detestable and disobedient, and worthless for any good deed" (Titus 1:16).
Remembering the Reformation

John Wycliffe lived almost 200 years before the Reformation and historians have called him the "Morning star of the Reformation." Born in the 1300s, Wycliffe criticized abuses and false teachings in the Church. In 1382 he translated an English Bible which was the first complete European translation done in nearly 1,000 years. He inspired a spiritual revolution by sending out The Lollards, itinerant preachers (the Lollards) throughout England. But the Lollardy movement was short-lived. The Pope was so infuriated by his teachings and his translation of the Bible into English, that 44 years after Wycliffe had died, he ordered the bones to be dug-up, crushed, and scattered in the river! Intense persecution stamped out his followers and teachings. Catholic Worshippers Flock to See Mary's Shinbone
The fragmented leg bone relic, believed to be that of Mary Magdalene and considered sacred by many Catholics, was recently on tour throughout the United States. It's permanent home is in the diocese of Frejus-Toulon at La Sainte Baume in southern France. See various pictures of relics
Catholics and Orthodox Seek Unity
In an unprecedented event, representatives of the Catholic Church in Poland and of the Russian Orthodox Church applauded the signing of a joint declaration on reconciliation last month. Catholic Archbishop Nowak said the "Holy Icon of the Black Madonna is a sign of our spiritual closeness, and also a symbol of Europe's two lungs, Eastern and Western, as the Servant of God John Paul II taught." Statue of Virgin Mary To Be Built Higher than   Statue of Liberty
President Ricardo Martinelli of Panama said that a new statue of the Virgin Mary will be erected on the coast in Panama City and will rise 100 meters - seven more than the Statue of Liberty in New York.
"It will be an icon of this city for the 500th anniversary of the discovery of the South Sea and for the first Catholic church on land," President Martinelli said. Read full story here.
The Economist Reports on the Catholic Church
The sexual-abuse scandals of the past 20 years have brought shame to the church around the world. In America they have also brought financial strains. By studying court documents in bankruptcy cases, examining public records, requesting documents from local, state and federal governments, as well as talking to priests and bishops confidentially, The Economist has sought to quantify the damage and the picture is not flattering. Read the report here.
A Critical Response from a Catholic
I am the Catholic who approached you after your seminar in Columbus, Nebraska last month. Since then I have read through your tracts and a good portion of the articles on your website, I understand your position but I believe God is a reasonable God. I refer to the Bible as little as possible, and instead refer to logic. You did a very poor job preparing your listeners to evangelize Catholics. Being Catholic myself, I'll not lie about my fellow Eucharist-recievers; far too many of them do the barest amount to avoid what is technically grounds for damnation. To be honest, most of your presentation was barely more than conjecture and fallacious statements which would not hold up in a mock trial, much less a serious scholarly debate. I feel I'm being a bit generous by saying that only twenty percent of your statements were actually worthy of serious consideration. Why should I care about anything at all you have to say?
Please pray that God will be glorified in all we say and do! Let us know how we can serve you and pray for you,
