Greetings in the Enduring Love of Jesus,
One of the greatest testimonies Christians can offer to an unbelieving world is our love for one another. Our Lord said, "By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another" (John 13:35). This love is also a mark of genuine Christian faith: "We know that we have passed out of death into life, because we love the brothers. Whoever does not love abides in death" (1 John 3:14). How are we doing? Some churches, which may be rigidly right in their orthodoxy, are unpleasantly cold in their love for the brethren. Evangelical leaders are saying they have never seen so much division within the church in their lifetime. Tragically, the causes of most bitter disputes in the Church are not doctrinal differences, but the hateful manner in which they are handled. Rather than speaking the truth in love with humble teachable spirits, Christians are dismissing one another with arrogant assertions, false accusations, combative disrespect and hateful misrepresentations. With today's technology, this unloving behavior is seen far and wide as it spreads from person to person via social networks, blogs and email. It is disheartening to see Christians breaking fellowship with one another and dishonoring the name of Christ over issues not related to the purity of the Gospel.
As Christians united in the truth of the Gospel, we must recognize that no one is an infallible interpreter of God's Word and no one has perfect theology. Personally, I know parts of my theology may be amiss, but I don't know which parts. If I knew, I would correct them. This is why respectful discussions about theology can be helpful and why we should strive to be good Bereans (Acts 17:11). We may have different opinions on eschatology, spiritual gifts, ecclesiology, the mode of baptism, the sovereignty of God and man's free will, but we should not let these issues cause discord, strife or dissension within the Body of Christ. Too often we stubbornly cling to our traditions and self-serving agendas rather than pursue our Lord's purpose for the church He purchased with His precious blood. Those who obey the truth will purify their souls for a sincere love of the brethren and fervently love one another from the heart (1 Pet. 1:22).
What can we do to be part of the solution and not part of the problem? First, we must be willing to apologize and seek forgiveness from those we have offended. This is crucial for preserving the unity of the Body and for maintaing a Christ-like testimony to the world. Second, we must offer forgiveness to those who have offended us. Paul wrote: "Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you" (Eph. 4:32). Third, when we have discussions on doctrine, we need to speak with patience and respect, with humility and gentleness and with love and self-control. We also need to pray, asking our Lord to give us an accurate understanding of His eternal truths. Only then can we pursue the perfect unity in truth that Jesus prayed for in His high priestly prayer. His prayer for unity had a divine purpose. It was so the world would know that God sent Him to redeem sinners from the bondage of sin (John 17:23). May God give us all the grace to be His witness and a testimony to the unbelieving world.

Southern Baptists Debate Sinner's Prayer
After considerable debate at the Southern Baptist Convention annual meeting on June 21, the members voted in favor of the Sinner's Prayer. The vote was not taken with every head bowed and every eye closed. One pastor said the emphasis on the Sinner's Prayer is unbiblical and damming. "I'm convinced that many people in our churches are simply missing the life of Christ, and a lot of it has to do with what we've sold them as the gospel, i.e. pray this prayer, accept Jesus into your heart, invite Christ into your life." He said. "Should it not concern us that there is no such superstitious prayer in the New Testament? Should it not concern us that the Bible never uses the phrase, 'accept Jesus into your heart' or 'invite Christ into your life'? It's not the gospel we see being preached, it's modern evangelism built on sinking sand. And it runs the risk of disillusioning millions of souls." He warned, "Many assume they are saved simply because of a prayer they prayed. It's not that praying a prayer in and of itself is bad, but the question is what kind of faith are we calling people to?" Read more. Letters from Around the World
Mr. Gendron, I was raised Baptist and converted to Catholicism when I married my devout Catholic wife. I knew she wouldn't marry me if I didn't convert. Since then I have been praying for wisdom and truth and found your book Preparing for Eternity to be a true blessing. I feel my eyes have been opened and now I am armed me with Scripture to refute Catholic dogma. I have been all alone but now I have hope. I know I can't remain a Catholic. My wife told me she will never leave the church and she reminded me of the promise I made to raise our children Catholic. She has complete blind faith in Catholicism and I dont think she will read your book, though I will try. I love my wife and kids but I want us to live in Truth. I don't want to tear my family apart. Please give me advice on how to proceed. Should I take a stand for the truth and risk losing my family? I am indebted to your book and I can't tell you how grateful I am.
K. W., Colorado
We praise God for leading you to the truth of His saving grace! Like you, God does not want that which He has joined together to be torn apart, therefore you need to trust Him in this difficult situation. He has appointed you to be the spiritual leader of your family and He will hold you accountable for that responsibility. Therefore, with great patience, love and humility, you need to make disciples of them by teaching them to obey all that Christ has commanded. Tell your wife that when you made that promise you did not know the Catholic religion was dogmatically opposed to God and His Gospel (Anathemas from the Council of Trent). Now that you know the true God and His Word you desire to be obedient from the heart of the doctrines you have learned (Rom. 6:17). I will call you to offer encouragement, prayer and support and also to recommend a good Bible teaching church in your area. May God give you wisdom and grace in this difficult situation.
Dear Mike, I am reading through your compilation of Scripture in your excellent book, Preparing For Eternity. I would love to give one to every Catholic neighbor of ours. But they even refuse your tracts. What can you do but keep them in prayer? We were where they are once upon a time, which gives us great cause to keep thanking God for bringing us into His marvelous, wonderful, abundant life. Keep up your effort, which is persistent, many will come to know our Jesus and our Father's precious gift to us. B.&.C. D., Syracuse, NY
Dear Mike, We re-watched one of your messages after many years, it blessed us once again for the uncompromising stand for the truth of the Word of God that you take for His glory and the enlightenment of those who would listen and truly seek the truth about what is going on. The "Christian" scene here in Ireland is bad, completely apostate but then should we be surprised? Like you, we rejoice, in that it, is indeed one of the signs of the soon coming of Our Lord Jesus Christ. D&M.O, Wexford Town, Ireland

International Eucharist Congress in Dublin
Participants from all over the world joined together for the 50th International Eucharistic Congress last month in Dublin, Ireland. One priest said he views the Eucharistic Congress as an opportunity to call back those who have been far from the faith. "We are campaigning now to bring back our brother and sisters, especially the Catholics back to the faith. The Eucharist can surely help us to bring them back to the Church. In my parish, I have perpetual Eucharistic adoration, and I am always campaigning to the people to come and pray before Our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament. It's the only way that we'll be able to ask them to return to the faith." Read more. His view is consistent with the pope's mandate that the Eucharist will be the center of worship for all Christianity. This non-negotiable form of worship is detailed in Mike's message entitled Prophecy and the Pope. |

Remembering the Reformation
As a Roman Catholic priest, Martin Luther fully dedicated himself to monastic life and to do good works to please God. Yet peace with God escaped him, so he devoted himself to fasts, flagellations, long hours in prayer and pilgrimages, and constant confession. The more he tried to do to appease God, the more aware he became of his sinfulness. This unrest drove him to a deeper study of Scripture and there he found peace with God when he read, "the just shall live by faith." Luther's theology were condemned as heretical by Pope Leo X. Luther boldly stated, "Unless I am convinced by proofs from Scriptures or by plain and clear reasons and arguments, I can and will not retract, for it is neither safe nor wise to do anything against conscience. Here I stand. I can do no other. God help me. Amen." Read more. |

The Final Battles of Pope Benedict XVI
The mood at the Vatican is apocalyptic. Pope Benedict seems tired, and unable and unwilling to seize the reins amid fierce infighting and scandal. While Vatican insiders jockey for power and speculate on his successor, he has withdrawn to focus on his still-ambiguous legacy. Fear is running rampant in the Curia, where the mood has rarely been this miserable. Men wearing purple robes are rushing around, hectically monitoring correspondence. No one trusts anyone anymore, and some even hesitate to communicate by phone. It all began in the accursed seventh year of the papacy of Benedict XVI, with striking parallels to the latter part of Pope John Paul II's papacy. The same complaints about poor leadership and internal divisions are being aired outside the Vatican's walls, while the pope himself seems exhausted and no longer able to exert his power. Benedict at 85 years of age is the oldest pope in 109 years.
A "reform of the Curia" is probably a contradiction in terms. Its hierarchical, essentially medieval organizational model is incompatible with modern management. The Vatican is an anachronistic, albeit surprisingly tenacious system, in which pecking orders and an absurd penchant for secrecy and intrigue prevail. "The only important thing is proximity to the monarch," says a member of a cardinal's staff. Rome works like an absolutist court, one in which decisions are made by people whispering things into the others' ears rather than by committees. Read more.

The Pros and Cons of Short-Term Mission Trips
Over the past twenty years I have trained, equipped and accompanied Christians on short-term mission trips to foreign countries. The experiences were both fruitful and rewarding as we glorified Jesus Christ by sharing His Gospel of grace. On the other hand, I have talked with Christians who have gone with organizations that never proclaimed the Gospel. Their purpose for going was to build relationships by painting or building homes. They wanted to earn the right to come back in subsequent years to share the Gospel. Robert Lupton reveals these problems in his book Toxic Charity. He says, "Contrary to popular belief, most missions trips do not: empower those being served, engender healthy cross-cultural relationships, improve quality of life, relieve poverty, change the lives of participants or increase support for long-term missions work." Ouch!
From the Gospel Coalition blog we read, "The Bahamas receives a short-term missionary for every 15 residents. Our generosity, sad to say, is often tied to a "cool" location and feeling good about what we do. We need to be the ones to paint the church, build the ditch, and put on vacation Bible school. We can't just send money. We have to send people. This is what causes me to question motives. While I believe there is a thoughtful way to be involved in some sort of cross-cultural, short-term ministry, wise partnership and wise use of money, would seem to dictate we cancel many---most?---of our trips. I believe short-term ministry has a place, and if done well can bring about healthy interdependence in the global church" Read more. |
