News from Evangelist Mike Gendron
May 2012
Greetings in the Name above all names,

The responses to my messages on discerning truth from error at Brannon Howse's Worldview Weekend Conferences in Minneapolis and Branson last month were very encouraging. Many of the attendees said they had never heard of the Vatican's attempt to reverse the Reformation by uniting all Christians under the power and influence of the Pope. Others said they realized for the first time the urgent need to rescue Roman Catholics from their false religion. We thank God for the privilege of ministering to His people and proclaiming the eternal truths of His Word in these times of great deception and apostasy.

As you will see from the articles below, the movement to unite all of Christianity with apostate Roman Catholicism is growing at a rapid pace. Throughout Scripture we are commanded with the strongest exhortations to never unite with religious teachers who oppose the Word of God or teach false doctrine. Today these commands are being ignored by those who seek the approval of man over God. They are seeking religious unity at the expense of truth and playing into the hands of Satan who is rebuilding his tower of Babel.

The Lord Jesus used the truth of His Word to divide believers from unbelievers. As born-again Christians we must seek spiritual unity only with those who believe the glorious Gospel of grace. Those who name the name of Christ, while embracing another gospel, are victims of deception. They are not our brothers and sisters in Christ and they must be discipled in the truth and exhorted to obey everything Christ has commanded.
Wheaton College Welcomes Catholic Cardinal George in a Conversation on Unity
The very disturbing "Conversation on Unity" that took place March 26 at Wheaton College between John Armstrong and Francis Cardinal George, Archbishop of Chicago was revolting and offensive to those who love God's Word. The two men spent the evening exploring the common ground evangelicals and Catholics share. Not once did they discuss
the fatal errors of Rome's distorted gospel that divide believers from unbelievers. It is appalling for a professing evangelical such as John Armstrong to ignore the precious doctrines the reformers gave their lives defending. His refusal to contend for the pure Gospel of grace is heartbreaking. Wheaton College, once a bastion for conservative Christianity, has shown how far it has drifted off course by hosting a Catholic Cardinal whose religion condemns with anathema everyone who believes the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Furthermore, his distorted gospel blocks the gates of heaven to hundreds of thousands of Catholics in the Chicago archdiosese. The conversation can be viewed here.
Bishops Offer Ways to Reduce Time in Purgatory
Dioceses around the world have been offering Catholics spiritual benefits in the form of indulgences, a sort of amnesty from punishment in the afterlife. The indulgence is a reminder of Rome's clout in mitigating the wages of sin. Martin Luther denounced the selling of them in 1517 igniting the Protestant Reformation. With a thousand-year history and volumes of church law devoted to its intricacies, it is one of the most complicated doctrines to explain. According to church teaching, even after sinners are absolved in the confessional and say their Our Fathers or Hail Marys as penance, they still face punishment after death, in Purgatory, before they can enter heaven. In exchange for certain prayers, devotions or pilgrimages, a Catholic can receive an indulgence, which reduces or erases that punishment instantly, with no formal ceremony or sacrament. There are partial indulgences, which reduce purgatorial time by a certain number of days or years, and plenary indulgences, which eliminate all of it, until another sin is committed. You can get one for yourself, or for someone who is dead. Charitable contributions, combined with other acts, can help you earn one. There is a limit of one plenary indulgence per sinner per day. Getting Catholics back into confession was one of the motivations for reintroducing the indulgence. In a 2001 speech, Pope John Paul described the newly reborn tradition as "a happy incentive" for confession. Read more.
Catalyst for Reversing the Reformation Dies
With the recent death of Chuck Colson, we must wait and see if the movement within evangelical Christianity to reverse the reformation will continue under new leadership. Colson was the co-author of the Evangelicals and Catholics Together unity accords in the 1990's and the Manhattan Declaration in 2009. The documents falsely convinced many evangelicals that Catholicism is a valid expression of biblical Christianity. Chuck Colson's unity accords were written in open defiance to the authority of God's Word and the biblical command to earnestly contend for the faith against false teachers. He ordered evangelicals not to evangelize or proselytize Roman Catholics because they already share a common faith in the Gospel of Jesus Christ. After his meeting with Pope John Paul II in 1995, Colson declared the pope to be a great defender of Christian orthodoxy. In 1998 Roman Catholic
Michael Timmis was named chairman of Colson's Prison Fellowship. Later it was reported that over 60 percent of Prison Fellowship chaplains were Roman Catholic. In his forward to the book Evangelical Catholics, by Roman Catholic author Keith Fournier, Colson wrote, "It's time that all of us who are Christians come together regardless of the difference of our confessions and our traditions." Colson also endorsed the book Ecumenical Jihad by Peter Kreeft which urges ecumenical union with Islam. A balanced assessment of Colson's legacy written by Tim Challies can be seen here.

Letters from Around the World
Letters
Helllo Mike,
I invited a friend who was raised Catholic to hear you speak at the Worldview conference. Having shared the Gospel with my friend over the last year, I knew he still had Catholic doctrine shadowing him. As we were driving home he says to me "I don't know how I'm going to tell my 82 year old staunch Catholic aunt about the decision I made tonight." I asked "what decision?"  He said "the decision to let go of everything the Catholic Church added to the Gospel and trust Jesus alone." The Holy Spirit obviously used that analogy you gave about clinging to monkey bars instead of trusting Jesus to speak to him. Thanks for your faithful service to the King! Jeff T., MN

Helo Mike,
Responding to your email, I don't argue Scripture because I am obedient to the Catholic Church's teaching. I am growing exponentially in my faith and have no desire to look elsewhere. I believe that the bread and wine become Jesus during the Mass. And boy am I blessed by receiving Him! The world would be much better off if Christians (all denominations) would concentrate on winning non-Christians to Christ, rather than focusing on differences within His Church. C.S., Internet

Dear C.S.,

Your fatal decision to trust man's teachings over God's Word will be a mistake you will pay for throughout all eternity. May God grant you repentance leading to a knowledge of the truth so you can come to your senses and escape the snare of the devil who holds you captive to do his will (2 Tim. 2:25-26).
Leaks Expose Vatican Bank Scandal
The Vatican has launched a rare criminal investigation to uncover who is behind leaks of highly sensitive documents that allege corruption and financial mismanagement in Vatican City. The governor of Vatican City, Archbishop Carlo Maria Vigano complained of corruption within the church and protested orders to remove him from his post. Officials were concerned that His efforts to clean up the Vatican would tarnish the pontiff's image. The Vatican Bank was enmeshed in scandals 30 years ago involving allegations of money-laundering and mafia connections. The U.S. State Department has put the Vatican on a list of countries of concern for money laundering and other financial crimes. Read more.
False Conversions are Suicide for Local Churches
Mark Dever, senior pastor of Capitol Hill Baptist Church in the nation's capital, warned on the opening day of the 2012 Together for the Gospel Conference that false conversions are "the suicide of the local church." Thousands, if not millions, of church members sitting in America's pews aren't really born-again Christians, a Washington, D.C., pastor said April 10 to a pastors' conference in Louisville, Ky. Dever said. "When a congregation is made up of many people whose lives more resemble the works of the flesh than the fruit of the Spirit, the experience of following Christ together, of love and encouragement and spurring on and mutual advocation and accountability, all of this is eroded and cooled and diminished. The church becomes more like the world." He said pastors unwittingly contribute to false conversions with watered-down teachings aimed at drawing a bigger crowd. "False teachers create false converts," he said. "And false converts -- guess what they do? They hire false teachers." Read more.
Mega Church Pastor's View of Sin Questioned
Megachurch pastor Andy Stanley is being criticized for a recent sermon illustration involving a gay couple in which Stanley labeled adultery, but not homosexuality, a sin. Does this signal the normalization of homosexuality at North Point Community Church?"  Read more.
Walid Shoebat's Response
In an effort to give a balanced perspective on the CNN link that I shared in our April e-newsletter regarding ex-terrorist Walid Shoebat's conversion to Christianity, here is his response to me. "No news agency, CNN or otherwise, has released any interviews with any official agency; no interviews with any police official, government officials or any recorded calls, memos or email correspondence from any Israeli government agency that can validate any of the slanderous claims made against me. CNN's Drew Griffin claimed that he checked my prison records. This is impossible since Israeli law prohibits access to such records without permission from an official or from the prisoner. Thomas Grieff, a prominent attorney in Israel already checked, and no probes have been done on my records to date by anyone."
Let us know how we can serve you for the Glory of Jesus,
