Vegetable Highlights at Outer Aisle FRUIT HIGHLIGHTS: From the orchards of Tyson Hill Farm, Waterford we have the finest fruit! This week the first yellow nectarines, plenty of yellow and white peaches, the Santa Rosa plum in which Indira writes fondly:
"Close your eye and inhale deeply. That's the richly aromatic and flavored Santa Rosa plum, an heirloom variety introduced in 1907 by Luther Burbank. It was developed in Santa Rosa from crossing plums he had imported from Japan: sweet flesh with tartness around the pit and skin, dark purplish-crimson skin has russet spots and a light bloom. The bloom, that dusty-looking coating on the skin, acts as a protective covering both to camouflage ripeness and as a sunburn barrier. We've grown Santa Rosas here on Tyson Hill Farm for nearly 50 years, and it is our second most popular plum, fresh and dried."
VEGETABLE HIGHLIGHTS: Wonderful abundance on the verge of ripening! Poetry of smells, colors and best of all tastes about ready to awaken all of our senses! Cucumbers have made their way to center stage: there's nothing quite as cooling and satisfying as sliced cucumber with a touch of salt on a hot summer's day. We'll have the first flush of Lemon cuc's as well as the Japanese kind with it's melon like flavor, the Marketmore (traditional kind) and pickling cucumbers in quantity. This week we'll have the first eggplant; first purple peppers; first Yukon Gold potatoes and Sungold Cherry tomatoes! NEW BULK OFFERINGS: Take advantage of bulk offerings at Outer Aisle. During the peak summer months we'll have oversupplies of a variety of fruits and vegetables. If you can, freeze, dehydrate or getting ready for a party. This week: Basil for pesto making (see recipe below); Blackcurrants for jelly, juice, drying; pickling cucumbers. |
