Highlights of the Week!
This time next week, weather permitting, we'll be generating our own power! Solar panels will be installed next week by Gold Country Electric and Solar Universe. Thank you to the Outer Aisle community for purchasing "Futures", we are more than half way to our goal of $9,000 (see article below).
We are featuring our own produce this week: broccoli, bok choy, Late Flat Dutch cabbage (a drum head variety introduced to the US in 1860's); lettuce, salad greens, green onions and greens. We will also have parsnips, celeraic, winter squash, onions and sweet potatoes and mandarins, apples and persimmons in plentiful supply.
New Winter Hours: Thursday 11 am to 5:30 pm and Saturdays 10am to 4pm. Open every week, except Xmas and New Years days.
New Release: Yellow Finn Potatoes 10/10/10 We are pleased to announce the availability of the most gorgeous Yellow Finn and Carola potatoes we have ever grown! These varietals, in our opinion, are the kings and queens of the potato world; premium storage varieties that keep all winter long with excellent flavor, versatile uses and packed with nutritional goodness. They are the outcome of a rare educational and community building event that brought over 80 volunteers together in early October to harvest a 1/2 acre of new ground planted entirely to potatoes, and worked entirely with a core group of a dozen volunteers eager to learn. We used the groundbreaking benefits that growing potatoes provide while offering an educational experience, that in turn provided the physical labor, and resulted in a "harvest" party open to the public where people of all ages gathered to take part. The end result, 8,000 pounds of potatoes guaranteed to feed many members of our community well into the spring. Your purchase of potatoes, whether by the 35lb case or in 1,000 lb quantities will ensure that ample funding be channeled into the 2011 FoCuS Seed Farm Project planned for the same 1/2 acre in Columbia. This Seed Farm will grow out varieties acclimatized to our region and eventually provide a seed bank for gardeners and farmers in our region. Availability (all winter long):Mixed varieties per 35 lb boxes for $45. Ask for bulk price rates.Available in small, medium and large sizesCarola: smooth skinned and yellow fleshed, with a naturally creamy texture. Yellow Finn: finely crackled, thin skinned, yellow flesh with flakey texture. Versatile uses: baked, roasted, soups and chowders, makes a great hash brown.

A Letter to the Outer Aisle Community:
Outer Aisle FOODS is excited to announce our plan for energy independence. We are a business that believes in solar power and reinvesting in our community. We made the bold move to sign up for a 3,000 watt solar array system to be i nstalled on our store roof by Christmas 2010. Taking advantage of Federal and State tax credit incentives and coupled with low panel prices, we deemed it to be the opportune time to make the investment. We will offset our entire energy needs, feed clean solar energy into the grid and take advantage of new regulations requiring PG&E to buy electricity above our usage. We are looking to you, the Outer Aisle community, for alternative financing that is creative, circumvents the regular lending channels and promotes a win-win situation for all. Are you interested in being part of this solar project? We need $9,000 to pay for the project and are seeking financial assistance in the form of Outer Aisle Futures. How to Buy Your Outer Aisle Futures:Take out a "future" for a minimum of $250 and upwards. Receive store credit to the value of the Future plus receive an additional 5% gift reward. You can shop, just as you would normally, using the "Futures" money in your account for all your purchases including CSA deliveries. By purchasing your Outer Aisle Futures you are helping us out in a big way, stimulating the local economy by fueling a green industry and also helping the larger community gain greater awareness and understanding of the benefits of going solar.
Please let us know as soon as possible if you are interested.

Recipes of the Week
PARSNIP AND APPLE PUREE (from the Gourmet Cookbook)
Parsnips are one of oldest vegetables according to historian William Weaver, they were gathered from the wild in the Stone Age and were commonly found in the kitchen gardens of ancient Rome. They are wonderful as an ingredient in roasted root vegetables, sweet and full of flavor they pair well with potatoes, beets, carrots and the like.
¾ pound of parsnips (peeled and coarsely chopped) 1 Tablespoon of butter ½ cup finely chopped onion 1 apple, peeled, cored and chopped ¼ teaspoon salt ¼ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper Sour cream to taste Pinch of ground allspice, or to taste
Eric's Ginger Almond Lime Dressing This is really fantastic! Goes well as a salad dressing on lettuce and cabbage. Makes a pint jar:
Juice of 2 limes 1/2 cup of olive oil 2 tsp sesame oil 1 TSP Tamari (soy sauce) 3 TSP agave syrup 1 inch piece of ginger grated 1 clove garlic, minced 1/4 cup almond butter Up to 1/4 cup of water (depending on consistency)
Blend together by shaking jar vigorously.
