A Word About CSA! For those of you not already signed up....Don't forget to sign up for CSA! Even though we will be opening year-round and are still in the abundant season, the peak is over and crops are diminishing. To ensure you continue to get the very best produce year round sign up for CSA and delay your start date! That's our recommendation! If you live close by and regularly shop at Outer Aisle on Thursdays and/or Saturdays we are offering for the first time this year (starting in November) a CSA pickup (where Outer Aisle is your pickup point) an exchange table. Something you don't like, you can exchange for something else as well as have the opportunity to shop the Outer Aisle. Ask us more, we'd be happy to explain.
Pick of the Week!Beautiful bells grace the ta bles this week and will for the rest of the month. Deep reds, yellows, orange and purple match the turning leaves of fall! We'll have specials all week long and recipes to go along with their abundance. There's nothing quite like a salad of crisp baby lettuce, tossed with slivers of red pepper, wedges of asian pears and topped with Gorgo nzola cheese! Simply toss with olive and vinegar (hopefully from Marisolio Tasting Room in Murphys), and you have the makings for a winning meal! Fruit this week! Gone are the peaches and nectarines! What a fantastic year for those fruits! Hello to grapes - four
different varieties: Thompson, Princess, Crimson and
Flame and four different varieties of apples: gala, summerfield, granny smith and
fuji. All from Smit Orchards in Clements! |
Bell Peppers feature predominantly this month. If you haven't tried
broiling them yet we suggest that you try this simple recipe.
All
peppers have very thin skins...this can be removed by charring. If you
have gas stove, the easiest way is to place peppers directly over full
flame, turning frequently until they are blackened all over. Place
them in a paper sack to sweat for ten minutes. Remove skins with
fingers while running under cold water. Core and de-seed, chop or
slice. They are ready to add to pasta, or marinate with garlic and a
splash or two of balsamic vinegar. If using electric heat... cut into
halves, place peppers on a tray under broiler to blacken...cover with a
damp towel and let sweat. Remove skins under water.
Excellent as a topping in a salad, in pasta, or antipasto dishes.
RECIPE of the Week!
RED BELL PEPPER SOUP (a customer favorite)
4 cups chicken broth or vegetable broth 2 jalapeno, split lengthwise, deveined and seeded 1 large red potato, peeled and chopped 4 tomatoes, seeded and diced 2 TBS olive oil 2 large cloves garlic, crushed 4 red bell peppers, seeded and chopped Salt and freshly ground pepper to taste ˝ cup milk ˝ cup heavy cream (optional) Zest and juice of 1 lime 1 cup sour cream, garnish (optional) Chopped fresh cilantro, garnish
Place broth in large saucepan. Add the chiles, potatoes, and tomatoes. Bring to a low boil over medium-high heat, then reduce and simmer, covered, 20 minutes. Remove the chiles - very important. In a large frying pan, heat oil over medium heat. Sauté the garlic and peppers 10 - 15 minutes, or until soft. Combine the garlic and peppers with the broth, potatoes, and tomatoes in a blender. Process until smooth. Return the mixture to the saucepan, and season with salt and pepper. Add the milk and cream, blending thoroughly. Reheat over low heat, so the soup does not boil. Add the lime zest and juice. Garnish. Yields: 7-8 cups; serves 6
This recipe freezes well, just omit the dairy

Potatoes, potatoes and more Potatoes! Do you remember last year around early October, the typhoon that swept across the Pacific from Japan and brought 3 inches of rain to our area? As farmers, we have learned that having an ear to the weather can make a huge difference. Hearing of this pending weather, we called out an S.O.S (Save Our Spuds) through our customer email list in the hopes of getting a few able bodies to help us dig and sort through 4,000 pounds of potatoes before they rotted in the wet soil. We were successful in rallying help, 40 people showed up and in less than 6 hours we had all the potatoes dug, sorted and in the cellar!
ANNOUNCING: 10/10/10, Potato Harvest Day! 10565 North Airp ort Road, Columbia Sunday October 10th, 8 am to 4pm
Can you tell it's not potatoes? The prize of pulling something from the ground is the experience you'll discover digging up potatoes!
You and your family are welcome any time during the day, stay for a few hours, half a day or all day, we will accept everyone! A sack of potatoes for a good day's work is in store.
In collaboration with FoCuS and co-Board member Cooper Kessel, we are orchestrating a Potato Harvest Day, open to the community. With this event, we hope to harvest a 1/2 acre of potatoes with some help from machinery, share in the bounty (spuds for all that help), fund the 2011 Seed Garden, inspire gardeners and potato growers and party it up with food, music and good cheer and friends.
We invite you to join us. Click for more details
