What You'll Find at the Markets this week
The perfume scented elixir of late August has arrived! Melons, in our opinion, are the quintessential complement to summertime eating. Cooling, refreshing, full of vitamins and natural isotopes, they are not only tasty but highly nutritious. As the parade of fruits and vegetables pass by our palates on a weekly basis, there is nothing quite like the arrival of melons on the scene. This year we are growing over twelve varieties; the Black Tail Mountain watermelon, developed to grow at 7000 feet in Idaho; a French dessert melon, "Chair Verte" with a green interior so luscious that it has inspired poems; and the honeydew melon with its soft delectable green flesh, and the popular but little known cousin, the orange fleshed honeydew, crisp and super sweet. Goodbye to the Faye Elberta peach that stole the show the last of weeks and welcome to the classic O'Henry peach. Grapes have appeared on the scene, the green Himrod and the large purple Fantasy grape. Time to make a peach and plum pie!
Stop
by one of the Farmers Markets this week! And don't forget our Indoor

RECIPES of the Week!
ROASTED RED BELL PEPPERS All peppers have very thin skins...this can be removed by charring. Using a gas stove or barbeque is the easiest way. Place peppers directly over full flame, turning frequently until they are blackened all over. Place them in a paper sack to sweat for ten minutes. Remove skins with fingers while running under cold water. Core and de-seed, chop or slice. They are ready to add to pasta, or marinate with garlic and a splash or two of balsamic vinegar. If using electric heat... cut into halves, place peppers on a tray under broiler to blacken...cover with a damp towel and let sweat. Remove skins under water. Excellent as a topping in a salad, in pasta, or antipasto dishes. Heirloom Tomato PlatterFrequented on our tables this time of year is a beautiful platter of sliced tomatoes, all colors and sizes, slices of peppers, wedges of lemon cucumbers. We crumble feta cheese, or slice mozzarella, scatter black Kalamata olives, drizzle olive oil and balsamic vinegar and sprinkle lime basil leaves. A feast that needs little accompaniment albeit family and friends to enjoy. Come check out our INDOOR FARMERS MARKET .... a cool place
to get your weekly needs. Every Thursday, noon to 6pm, all summer long!

Producer Profile: Taylor Mountain Gardens, Douglas Flat We get to feature ourselves this week! This is our 18th year growing vegetables. From small beginnings in 1993 we broke ground on a plot of land on Penn Gulch in Murphys and never looked back. That same year we began the Arnold Farmers Market with six feet of table and a handful of supporters. In that same year we began a CSA with less than a handful of folks. Over the years we have put together harvest festivals where we cooked for 200 people, garlic festivals drawing over 500 folks, farm to table dinners, inspired apprentices to take up farming professionally, hosted WOOFERS, saved and collected rare seeds, made compost, conducted workshops, introduced Brandywine tomatoes, called ourselves organic before it became a household word and moved beyond organic as soon as it became a wholesale word. We moved our farm at age 15 to a new location and expanded our CSA to a year round operation. We co-created a non-profit around self-reliance and community. Through our past endeavors and the community support received over the years, our final project in creating Outer Aisle represents the culmination of all these things and more. The chapter might be over, but the story continues.
