Events at Barstow Senior Center

 

   The Barstow Senior Center, 555 Melissa Ave., will be offering the following programs today: Mojave Carvers from 8 to 11 a.m. Crafter Group from 9 to 11 a.m. Lunch from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Baked beans with franks, Coleslaw, raisin bread and cake with strawberries. Wii bowlers from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. Line dance classes with Nancy Dittman from 1 to 3 p.m. Drop in and check out the other activities that are going on during the day like puzzles and card games and the library has many books to choose from.    'National Day of Prayer'

 

   The Barstow Christian Ministerial Association in association with the National Day of Prayer will celebrate the National Day of prayer with a breakfast meeting at Quigley's, 2841 Lenwood Road today from 7 to 10 a.m., to pray for our nation, the world, the Peace of Jerusalem, and the church and other needs. Also, the group will be meeting on Barstow City Hall steps at noon for a continued time of prayer for the community needs. Brochures from the National Day of Prayer will be available.

 

   Safe and Sane fireworks seminars

 

   The City Council for the City of Barstow approved the sale and discharge of "Safe and Sane Fireworks" within the Barstow city limits at its regularly scheduled meeting on April 16, 2012. Ten (10) Non-Profit Organizations will be selected to sell "Safe and Sane Fireworks" this year via a selection process.

 

   Those Non - Profit Organizations interested in selling Safe and Sane Fireworks will be required to attend one of two (2) "Safe and Sane Fireworks" Safety Seminars, scheduled today at City Hall, 220 East Mountain View Street, in the Council Chambers. The first meeting starts at 10 a.m. and the second meeting at 6 p.m. City staff, Interim Fire Chief Ross and the permitted Wholesale Fireworks Distributors willing attendance to give the safety presentation and answer questions.

 

   The Safety Seminar is mandatory for those Non-Profit Organizations that wish to submit an application to sale "Safe and Sane Fireworks" within the city limits of Barstow. A certificate will be presented to those Non-Profits in attendance.

   Retired Teachers meeting

 

   The May luncheon of CalRTA will be held today at 11:30 a.m. at the Trinity Lutheran Church, La Paz and Molino Dr. in Victorville. A program of favorite "oldies" will be presented by the Divas and Divos under the direction of Norma Stafford and arranged by Carol Nyborg. Lunch will be catered by Domingo's of Boron.    'His Hands Serving U' meeting

 

   His Hands Serving U holds meetings the first Thursday of the month at 224 Woodham Ave., from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Visitors welcome. For information, call 760-552-9074.

 

   Bereavement support group

   Best Opportunities will hold a hand - made craft sale every Thursday at the Barstow Mall, 1800 E. Main St., from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Proceeds benefit Best Opportunities.

   Patriot Forum yard sale

 

   The Patriot Forum/ Box's for the Troops, will be holding a yard sale on Friday and Saturday from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at 1280 Nancy St. There will be clothes, household items, furniture, and much more. All proceeds will go towards the purchase of items for the troops in and around the war zones.

 

   Laguna Tribal meeting

 

   A Laguna Tribal meeting will be held on Friday at 2 p.m. at Holiday Inn in Lewood. Governor from Laguna will be present.

 

   Steak dinner

 

   The VFW Post 2143, 25190 W. Main St. will be serving a steak dinner on Friday at 6 p.m. Donation is $10 and includes baked potato, salad, dinner roll, vegetables.    BCC's music department holds spring vocal concert

 

   The Music Department of Barstow Community College will hold its spring vocal concert on Friday at 7 p.m. in the interim Performing Arts Center. The concert is free and open to all residents of Barstow and the surrounding communities. The evening features the College Choir and Broadway Voice classes. Hear songs from Broadway shows as well as tender ballads, multicultural works and pop songs.

   Rummage Sale

 

   Lenwood Community Church, 25104 W. Main St., will be holding its semi-annual rummage sale on Friday and Saturday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. This sale will include furniture, household items, clothes, shoes, books, toys and much more.    Karaoke

 

   Karaoke at the American Legion in Newberry Spring #751 will be held the first and third Friday of each month from 7 to 11 p.m.. Everyone is welcome to come down to sing, dance, be entertained and simply have fun. Food will be available from the kitchen. All funds raised go to support veterans services and programs. Paint The Town Purple

The deadline to participate in Barstow's 3rd Annual Paint The Town Purple event is Tuesday May 8th at 9pm. The event is done in conjunction with the Relay For Life and honors and shows support for all who have battled and are currently battling cancer and those who care for them.

 

It's easy and free to join... Just choose a place to decorate with the color purple like your home, office,classroom, school, cubicle, or church - it's up to you!!! Let your imagination go!

 

Judging will take place on Wednesday May 9th beginning at 9:00 am by a panel of Survivors. The winners will be announced on Saturday May 19th at the Opening Ceremonies for Barstow's Relay For Life at Barstow High School.

CHI ALPHA MISSION TOUR YOUTH GROUP
ANNUAL GARAGE SALE

 

The Chi Alpha Mission Tour Youth Group from First Baptist Church will hold their annual garage sale this Saturday from 8am - 1pm at 1009 E. Virginia Way.  The funds will be used to help cover expenses incurred in this year's tour to Kentucky where the members will be teaching Vacation Bible School and ministering to the community with hopes of revitalizing it's younger sector.  Donations are being accepted and may be taken to the church anytime through Friday at 5pm.  If larger items are in need of pick-up please call the church's office at (760) 252-2949.

  Boys & Girls fundraiser

 

   A fundraiser for the Boys & Girls Club of Barstow will be held at Mollie's Pub, 1309 E. Main St., on Saturday. Proceeds from the sale of $1 tacos will go to the nutrition program at the club. Tacos will go on sale starting at 1 p.m. until gone. For information, call 760-987-8799.

 

   Elder Haven fundraiser

 

   Barstow Elder Haven will be holding a fundraiser on May 5. Tickets are now on sale for two tacos, beans, rice, and dessert to be served from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Dine-in at First United Methodist Church, 404 E. Mt. View, or available for take-out.    Community yard sale

 

   The Hinkley Senior Citizens Club, 35997 Mt. View Road, will have a community yard sale on Saturday May 5 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. You may rent a table inside the building for $15 or outside for $10.    Newberry Springs Senior Center, 33383 Newberry Road, Newberry Springs, will hold bingo the first and second Saturday of each month. Doors open at 5 p.m. with play starting at 6 p.m. Hot dogs will be served from 5 to 6 p.m. The more in attendance, the bigger the jackpots.

 

   Barstow Mall craft fair and mini swapmeet

 

   Barstow Mall is holding a craft fair and swap meet every Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Space is free for nonprofit organizations and all others are $5 for one spot or $10 for two spots. Must have tables for merchandise or rentals available for $1. Raffles and entertainment.

   Historical monument to be erected inNewberry Springs

 

   Newberry Springs welcomes The Billy Holcomb Chapter of the E. Clampus Vitus who will be erecting an historical monument. The monument will be placed in front of The Barn, 44560 National Trails Highway. The Clampers will arrive in Newberry Springs on May 4, erection of the monument will take place on May 5 and the dedication will be May 6 at 10 a.m. Speakers for the event will include Mike Lopez, Honorary Mayor of Newberry Springs, who will also be presenting the "key to the city" to the Billy Holcomb Chapter. There will be a chicken and rib barbecue following the monument dedication ceremony. The public is encouraged to attend this historic event in Newberry Springs.
