Q. Dr. Geo, I am newly diagnosed with prostatitis. What should I do to maintain my health and help my recovery?
A. Firstly, it depends on what type of prostatitis you have, as there are 4 types and each has different classifications and treatments. If you have bacterial prostatitis, for example, you will need to take antibiotics. In general, most prostatitis cases are chronic, non-bacterial where antibiotics are of little help. Flomax, another common treatment, often times does not help either. You should maintain maximum prostate health through an anti-inflammatory diet lifestyle (low in gluten and carbohydrates) as well as stretching exercises like yoga. You should also look at all the treatment options and manage your medical records so as to give your health care provider a better understanding of your history. Natural agents like quercetin and rye pollen extract can be helpful.
