"Learning is the only thing the mind never exhausts, never fears,
and never regrets."- Leonardo da Vinci
With the end of another semester, comes a new graduating class ready to make their mark in the workforce. Some first thoughts may include: "What now?" and "Am I really ready for this?"
Well graduate, take a deep breath and remember what inspired you to work so hard to walk that stage. It is no mystery that the job market has become competitive, but job seekers should be aware that Workforce Solutions Alamo is reporting the lowest unemployment rate (6.2% UE in the San Antonio metro area) since May 2009. Also, a recent survey by the National Association of Colleges and Employers has found that businesses are expecting to hire 9.5% more graduates this year versus last year. With that said, get your resume ready and interviewing skills strong because it is time to find your next great opportunity!
For 2012 grads intent on landing their dream jobs, US News provides seven key things that employers want:
- Facebook accounts that don't embarrass anyone--One in three employers said they use social networks to conduct background checks on job candidates, and 40 percent of those that do said they specifically check Facebook.
- Entrepreneurial experience--By launching their own side businesses or setting up a shop online, college students can teach themselves about entrepreneurship and increase their value to potential employers in the process.
- Leadership experience--About half of employers surveyed said that they look to hire people who have held leadership positions in on-campus organizations.
- Internship experience--Nine in 10 employers said they look for students to have one or two internships before graduating, and that those internships should be at least three months each to provide enough experience.
- Basic knowledge of the job--Standard career advice suggests that job candidates should have a handful of questions to ask their potential employers to help demonstrate their knowledge of the way the company works.
- Communication skills--A whopping 98% of employers said they consider communication skills to be essential.
- A good attitude--Job candidates should strive to come across as enthusiastic and friendly, and always follow-up with a thank-you note.

 EMPLOYMENT TIP #2
Be aware of your talking to listening ratio.
It's easy for recent grads to get excited during the interview when trying to prove their qualifications, but experts warn they be aware of how much they're talking. Interviewees shouldn't let nerves prevent them from listening and answering questions directly. Listen to where the interview can go because it doesn't have to be a standard process. If you're listening to what they're saying, you'll ask better questions and give them the information that they desire. |
