Farewell!!

Danielle

Danielle Espinoza, Scholarship & Alumni Coordinator, and creator of the Palo Alto College Alumni Newsletter and Career Link is saying goodbye to PAC to pursue new adventures. Danielle valued her time at Palo Alto College, creating a new face of alumni relations at PAC and developing the scholarship component in the Center for Academic Transitions.   Through Danielle the scholarship and alumni component at Palo Alto College has become an example for other Alamo Colleges.

When asked about her experiences Danielle stated, "My experience at PAC will remain with me always.  I have learned a great deal about the education industry, which will be a great benefit to my future endeavors.  I would like to say thank you to everyone I've worked with at PAC, their hard work, and unwavering dedication to the students is an inspiration.  I will never forget their kindness and passion for what they do every day!  The students were a joy to work with and I hope to stay connected as I begin this new chapter."  Under Danielle's guidance and passion for greatness we have been able to grow in our ability to provide services to our students and alumni. We wish her well on her future endeavors and thank her for all of her contributions to our campus and in our lives.

"How lucky I am to have something that makes saying goodbye so hard".  ~Carol Sobieski and Thomas Meehan, Annie

"You never get a second chance to make a good first impression."

This statement seems to be the origin of every job seekers' anxiety.  What if that first impression is something that is by chance and only lasts a minute? Will you be ready? You never know when opportunity is right around the corner!  The best tool to have in your arsenal is an "elevator speech."

Amy Drew from Brass Magazine explains the need for an "elevator speech." The idea is to say what you need to about yourself in the time it takes to ride an elevator from the bottom floor to the top -- and sound good doing it.

Use these tips to develop such a strategy:

  • DEFINE YOURSELF. Jot down key words that describe you, your strengths and skills.
  • HOOK YOUR LISTENER. Don't just say: "Hi, my name is Pete and I just graduated from ABC College with a degree in business." Try something like: "Hi, my name is Pete, and I just spent the last four years preparing to influence my generation with new technology that will redefine how we work."
  • LESS IS MORE. Get to the point, so you don't waste their time or patience. Convey your message with as few words as possible.
  • EXPLAIN IN LAYMAN'S TERMS. For example, "interactive communication software" doesn't sound any better than saying "blog." USE A GOOD OPENER. For example "I'm starting a website that raises money for students interested in studying abroad." (Nonprofit entrepreneur)
  • PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE. Your speech should roll off your tongue. You want to look confident, but not pushy.
