Alumni Spotlight...Abel Gonzales!ABEL

Tell us about your family and upbringing:

My father worked at Kelly AFB and my mother was a stay at home mom raising my brother, three sisters, and me. My senior year at Harlandale High School I went to see my counselor and I was looking forward to going to college. The counselor looked at me and said I'd be wasting my time that I wasn't college material based on my transcript. I wasn't pushed to go to college; I was actually pushed not to go.

How did this impact your decision to pursue a career in your current industry?

Being that I wasn't someone that was recommended to go to college, I didn't consider it an option. I went to work right after high school and found myself working at a local warehouse unloading 18 wheelers in the receiving department for 10 hours a day. The day to day monotony encouraged me to start seeking something else. I felt like I needed more.
