job newspaper

Greetings!

As any currently employed person will tell you, office politics will affect you in some way throughout your working life. As stated in the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) magazine (as adapted from INROADS' Guide to Corporate Survival Training Module), employees who have developed "political savvy" do well and are able to advance through the organization.

Political savvy is simply understanding how things work. That can include knowing and abiding by the company culture, not making the boss look bad, identifying the people with power, being a straight shooter, being visible to management, being indispensible, being accountable, handling criticism constructively, being a good listener,  and treating everyone with respect and consideration.

Your first year with a company is critical and a mentor can help you navigate through office politics as you grow personally and professionally.
