Alumni Spotlight
The Personal Journey of Artist & Teacher Jose Guajardo
By: Danielle Espinoza

I recently sat down with PAC Alumnus Jose Guajardo, talented artist Joe Guajardoand art instructor at Northwest Vista College.  Prior to meeting Guajardo I was given his contact information from Alba De Leon, the PAC Fine Arts Lead Instructor, who said it was important that I meet Guajardo.  She spoke highly of her former student and was very proud of his accomplishments.

There was an immediate buzz around the office when I mentioned that I was scheduled to meet with Guajardo.  I started receiving photos of his work and articles from exhibitions he'd participated in.  As I looked through some of his work from years past, I was immediately struck by the colorful realism, raw emotion and historical beauty he conveys in his thought-provoking work.  As a non-traditional student Guajardo became well-known on campus for his soft-spoken fervor for creating emotion on canvas.

His natural born talent and enthusiasm for infusing life and art together continues to resonate on our campus from those who had the opportunity to know him.  Guajardo's long-time mentor, friend and PAC Lead Transfer Advisor Charlie Garcia said, "He has an amazing natural gift!  He takes a paint brush in his hand and all of sudden magic happens."  Garcia joined me for my interview with Guajardo for an overdue reunion.

After meeting Guajardo, I realized I was sitting next to an impassioned individual with an incredible amount of knowledge and passion.   His story began on the Westside of San Antonio at the Alazan-Apache Courts with his parents and two siblings.  His hard-working parents provided a solid foundation for their children and pushed them to receive their education.  Guajardo's love of art began as a young child with his father his catalyst.

"My father and I communicated through art.  We didn't have money to buy art supplies, so we made our own.  We'd make toy soldiers and sculptures out of tortilla masa or mud.  He taught me to use creative materials," Guajardo said fondly.

Logistics Program Highlight
In the late 80's a group of city leaders asked for a logistics programLogistics to support the local demand for logistics jobs and Palo Alto College rose to accept the challenge.

The program has since awarded 49 AAS degrees and over 99 certificates.  Felipe Camacho was the first to receive his AAS in 1997 and latest graduates include Michael Salas, and Dennis Whitworth, who currently work for Fortune 500 companies Boeing and Toyota.   The program continues to build on the shoulders of its founding leaders Bill Daugherty, Paul Bunsendahl, Rick Bonnell, and Paulette Jordan.  They had incredible knowledge and experience in logistics, and a passion for education.

In January Ronnie Brannon took responsibility for the program and carries the message to all who are willing to listen in the city and throughout the state.  His passion for teaching and promoting logistics to the community is truly inspirational.

Transportation, Warehousing, Purchasing, Operations Management, Quality Management, Teaming, and Supervision are just a few of the logistics classes.  Students learn essential knowledge and skills in the world of logistics.  While students earn their degree, they can receive one of five certificates:
  • Logistics Management
  • Warehouse Management
  • Manufacturing Management
  • Transportation Management
  • International Logistics
Logistics courses are offered on campus or online.  Course hours are accepted into the program from other colleges, universities and the military.

Students receive jobs as warehouse specialists, purchasing clerks, quality control clerks, warehouse supervisors, purchasing agents, and more!  Salaries range from $30,000 to $100,000 in San Antonio, based on education and years of experience.

Whether the economy is up or down logistics are always needed.  Logisticians ensure people have access to what they need and want.  It is another unique program PAC offers to our community.

Army ROTC Now Offered at PAC
Army ROTCFor the first time in its 25 year history, Palo Alto College is offering a U.S. Army Reserve Officers Training Corps (ROTC) designed to give students the tools, training and experiences needed to succeed in any competitive environment.

The program is under the direction of the University of Texas at San Antonio. Academic classes are held at PAC, while field training exercises will be held at UTSA.  Enrolling in the Army ROTC Basic Course offered at PAC does not involve a commitment of service to the Army unless the student has received an ROTC scholarship.

According to Vincent Bosquez, Coordinator of PAC's Veterans Affairs, interest in an ROTC program at PAC has been growing over the past several years, and similar courses are being offered at other Alamo Colleges.

"Army ROTC gives students the academic and practical experiences they need to become leaders in a military or civilian environment," Bosquez said. "Along with leadership lessons, the program offers physical fitness training and exciting opportunities to challenge yourself on a daily basis."

For more information on the Army ROTC program at PAC, call the UTSA office at (210) 458-4622.
