| Is it time for your organization's annual health check-up?
If your organization had to take an annual health exam, would it pass?
By February, most new year's resolutions have failed or been forgotten. Most individuals' resolutions are related to health and fitness. What if organizations were required to have annual health exams -- would yours pass?
It's easy to quickly list what characterizes a healthy organization: financial stability, customer and employee satisfaction, respected leadership, etc. But how does an organization achieve and maintain health? And how can an unhealthy organization diagnose its ailments?
Like an annual physical exam for individuals, a periodic health survey benefits organizations. Points of current pain as well as longer term unhealthy trends can be identified. Before simple disorders worsen and spread, the information from an organizational health survey could be used to plan and implement steps to return to health. After all, it's much easier to recover from a cold than from pneumonia.
The "Organizational Health Measure"
By surveying managers, their subordinates, and bosses over the past four years, we have collected data from over 125 organizations against which we compare your organizational health rating. The focus of the survey is on work culture and internal effectiveness.
Respondents are asked to rate 19 attributes (for example: teamwork and camaraderie; employee development and support) on a scale of one to six (where one is "terrible" and six is "fantastic"). On average, the Organizational Health Measure rating for all respondents collected over the life of the survey (over 300 individuals from over 125 organizations) is 4.1.
Focus on treatment
Once you have your Organizational Health Measure report in hand, you can focus on a treatment plan. Rather than sampling different therapies, you have a statistically rigorous tool to pinpoint areas of weakness. With our many years of experience working with leaders, we can help you develop an action plan for implementation.
Leadership behaviors impact organizational health
Abundance Leadership identifies four competency clusters (Self-Awareness, Vision, Staff-Related, and Visibility), each composed of a collection of characteristics that are essential to effective leadership. These characteristics are also tied to organizational health: for example, teamwork and camaraderie is a characteristic of healthy organizations -- and leadership behaviors such as communication, interpersonal awareness, and decision-making are integral in promoting or undermining teamwork and camaraderie.
Teamwork and camaraderie is one of 19 items related to organizational health included in our organizational health measure survey. Do you like working for your boss?
One of the questions included in the 360-degree feedback survey that we use with leaders participating in the Abundance Leadership training is directed at their subordinates. It asks "How do you feel about working for this boss?" 58% of subordinates expressed positive feelings about their boss and 42% gave them negative ratings. Additionally, analysis of the results shows that the Organizational Health Measure is significantly and positively correlated with positive ratings of bosses by their subordinates. In healthy organizations, more people report they enjoy working for their bosses.
