Blackhawk - The Eternal Indian
|
In 1911, sculptor Lorado Taft completed the statue of what he called the Eternal Indian. It is more commonly know today as Blackhawk, in memory of the famous Sauk and Fox Indian chief who roamed the Rock River Valley almost 200 years ago.
The statue is located in Lowden State Park and overlooks the river valley and the community of Oregon. This summer marks the 100th anniversary of the statue's completion. Join us in July for the Oregon Trail Days Festival as we celebrate the Blackhawk Statue's 100th birthday.

Oregon Park District's Maple Syrup Project
|
The Oregon area is rich in rolling hills and forests. In order to utilize some of the resources available in our area parks, the Oregon Park District has taken on the project of tapping Maple trees and boiling the sap to create Maple Syrup. Jon Barnhart, a staff member of the Park District, is in charge of the project. These photos illustrate tapping a maple tree and the process of boiling the sap with the end result being maple syrup. This Famous Oregon Maple Syrup will be donated to the Oregon Lions Club forf their Pancake Breakfast in conjunction with the Oregon Trail Days Festival in July.
