Our Vision and Purpose
Issue: #88September 17, 2012
This is the busiest week for Pamplin Career Services as we welcome over 160 companies and over 500 company reps to Blacksburg to participate in the 30th Annual Business Horizons Fair on Thursday, September 20 from 10-4pm in Squires.

Your success in getting interviews for an internship or full-time job has more to do with how you prepare BEFORE the fair and how you follow up AFTER the fair. To prepare you for the day, we will be hosting a session Tuesday, Sept 18 from 5-6pm in Pamplin 1045 with Freddie Mac to help you prepare. If you cannot make that event, watch this video

You will need to prepare by reviewing the companies attending and researching a little bit about the firms. You may get the most recent list (5 new ones registered last week) as an Excel file at BusinessHorizons.org.

Specifically, the new firms are PetSmart (new to Pamplin), Lockheed Martin (a veteran employer of our alums), Dollar Tree Stores (attendee last year located in Chesapeake), Vocus (a neat PR software company in Beltsville MD) and Royall & Company (a consulting company helping colleges meet enrollment numbers). They will be located upstairs in the Old Dominion Ballroom.

Finally, about 20-25% of employers will be interviewing on campus on Friday, September 21. You may be asked the day of the fair on the spot or perhaps called in the late afternoon/early evening on Sept 20 to interview the next day in either Smith Career Center or Owens Banquet Hall. Please be prepared for this likelihood. All other employers will be interviewing during the formal On-Campus Interviewing process beginning October 1. Note the dates and deadlines.

If you have any questions, please email me this week at smease@vt.edu. This is the best way to connect with me. Good luck!
Company Days in the Pamplin Atrium

The purpose of the Company Days in the Pamplin Atrium is to provide employers and students with additional opportunities to connect for full time and internship possibilities.

As you come to and from class stop by and talk to these employers. It is informal. You do not need to wear a suit. Just talk.

Many will have free giveaways, food and drink. They want you to stop by and so do I. Firms are usually present between 10-2pm.

Here is this week's schedule:

Tuesday, September 18 - Freddie Mac, Protiviti, Victaulic

Wednesday, September 19 - Altria, Fidelity Investments, CGI Federal, Cvent, Kohl's, OmniPoint, David J. Joseph, Keiter, Virginia Asset Management, DISH Network

Perfect Job Seeker Pyramid

Step 4: Develop Your Personal Network

Once you have your Major LIC identified and branding materials created, you will want to engage your network through proven techniques. Nearly 80 percent of all jobs are never advertised, and they are uncovered through personal relationships. You cannot ignore this tactic in your job search. Often, people do not know how to reach out or do not feel comfortable asking for help.

Getting Started

You get started by conducting information interviews. The purpose of an information interview is to expand your network by identifying people you want in it. The information interview is designed to obtain information about a person, his/her company and industry. Follow this 10-step process:

  • Write a handwritten note to the person. Why? When was the last time you got one? It breaks through the communication clutter we receive on a daily basis and it stands out.
  • Tell the recipient who you are and why you are writing.
  • Request a 10-miunte timeframe to ask about their company, industry, and interests.
  • Ask for a convenient day and time for the interview.
  • Say when you will follow up and do it.
  • Prepare for the information interview by researching the person, firm, and industry.
  • Be prepared to conduct the interview at any time.
  • Keep notes during the interview and do not go over 10 minutes.
  • Ask for referrals at the end of the conversation.
  • Write a handwritten thank-you note.

Once you conduct your information interview, you will need to create an electronic database of contact information. You will want to add everyone you know to this list. You have the information-it is more than likely scattered in smart phones, email inboxes, business cards, social media sites, Google search, and LinkedIn. It would be wise to take some time to compile it for future easy retrieval.

As you meet more people, it will be critical to create a systematic approach to keeping in touch. Keeping in touch may mean electronically on social networking sites, formal face-to-face visits, or anything in between. The important thing is that you do it and oftentimes this step in the networking process is the most difficult to complete. Selecting a dedicated time and schedule will make it easier.

Expand Your Network

In addition to information interviews, attend offline events, join offline groups, and volunteer for public speaking opportunities, as well as find a publisher of your written thoughts and ideas about a topic of interest. Online activities such as blogging, LinkedIn, Twitter and Facebook are also useful but these popular social networking techniques are just one avenue to building your network.

Networking is the first step to becoming a Perfect Job Seeker. The next will require you to remain humble in your interaction with your network.
