How a Vacuum Cleaner Could Help Your Business

When thinking about technology rarely does the image of a vacuum cleaner come to mind. Without this common tool how much harder would it be to keep things clean? Yes, it could be done but think of the effort needed. If you take this idea and apply it to the technology you use in your daily routine, you may want to evaluate what your options are to add or upgrade what you have.

With technology evolving and leaping forward so rapidly, what was once cutting edge can actually be slowing down your company and it may be time for you to consider the replacement options.

Four great lessons that you can apply to technology decisions are:

  1. Be timely.
  2. Don't be afraid.
  3. Take the time to learn about it.
  4. Train yourself.

You can read more about these technology lessons in the article 4 Things My New Vacuum Cleaner Taught Me About Technology Upgrades. If after reading this you would like to discuss some options for upgrading your Dynamics GP, Content Management or Document Capture solution, please let us know. We would be happy to show you how to give your company new growth potential.

How To Avoid Selling On Price

Competing on price generally means you end up cutting into your margins. At a time when every dollar counts, you need to find ways of making sales without compromising your bottom line.

Here are 7 suggested ways of protecting your margins from the price bandits:

  1. Find new markets
  2. Benchmark your prices against your competitors
  3. Develop unique products
  4. Bundle your product with services
  5. Repackage and upgrade
  6. Build your reputation so competing on price isn't an issue
  7. Create scarcity

If you find yourself in a price-cutting war with competitors, or if prospects are questioning your prices, it may be time to focus on the value of what you provide as opposed to the cost. Take This Deduction Before Year End

As a business owner, you're likely envisioning the approaching New Year's Eve party, signaling the end of 2011 and any tax deductions your business might have qualified for this year. If so, you'll want to take note of the changes to the Section 179 tax code which allows deductions and "bonus" depreciation on certain business purchases.

Most tangible goods including"off-the-shelf" software, such as CAPSYS CAPTURE, Hyland OnBase, FileBound or Microsoft Dynamics, qualify for the Section 179 Deduction. Also, to qualify for the Section 179 Deduction, the equipment and/or software purchased must be placed into service between January 1, 2011 and December 31, 2011. If you've been considering the purchase of Enterprise Content Management (ECM), Accounting, Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) or Customer Relationship Management (CRM) software, this is a great time to invest while you can still take advantages of the tax benefits for 2011.

What Software Qualifies?

For basic eligibility, the software must meet all of the following general specifications:

  1. The software must be financed (only specific type leases or loans qualify), or purchased outright by you.
  2. The software must be used in your business or income-producing activity.
  3. The software must have a determinable useful life.
  4. The software must be expected to last more than one year.

In addition, these three specific stipulations must be met:

  1. The software must be readily available for purchase by the general public.
  2. The software must be subject to a non-exclusive license.
  3. The software must not have been substantially modified.

We can assist you in reviewing your business requirements to determine if a new ERP or CRM software solution can benefit your business - and perhaps qualify for a substantial tax deduction! (NOTE: We encourage you to contact your tax professional about the specific guidelines of the Section 179 tax code.)

Cash now: Managing Receivables with Microsoft Dynamics GP

At times when bank credit is scarce, there is a danger that your customers will manage their cash flow by paying suppliers later. Since cash inflow is vital to the health of your business, the best way to avoid late payments is to be very organized. That means having a system that can manage and predict cash inflows from accounts receivables, monitor daily cash collection tasks, facilitate customers communications, and help you minimize your aging receivables.

See how you can use Microsoft Dynamics GP to minimize your aging receivables and improve your cash inflow by watching this short video. After watching the video if you have further questions on how else Microsoft Dynamics GP can help you please contact us at 630.875.1100 or john.dobbins@idtconsulting.com.

Using Ratings On Your SharePoint Site

Have you ever bought something online? If you have you will know that reading reviews and ratings assist you in making a decision on your purchase. Wouldn't it be nice if you could apply that logic to all of the information you use at work? Now, we wouldn't advise that you give the boss' memo a one star review, but in all seriousness if you were to use a rating system you would be able to easily sort through all of the information to find which documents were most used and those that needed improvement. In this SharePoint blog post, Why use ratings and how to add a ratings tool to a SharePoint site, they describe how you can easily implement this in your own SharePoint library.

Using LinkedIn to Generate Business

It seems social media is a topic that is showing up everywhere you look. The question is how do you use this new tool to generate business? Most social media programs are aimed at consumers as a way to keep track of what their friends and families are doing. While they have their place they don't always seem very professional. If you are not familiar with LinkedIn you may want to consider it for your business life. It is squarely aimed at the professional community and has the real ability to help you discover sales leads and business opportunities.

The first thing you need to do is create an account and follow these simple steps to setup your profile:

  • Add a picture to your profile
  • Consider adding video
  • Don't forget to add your full contact information

For more information on these tips and others you can refer to How To Find And Attract Leads Using LinkedIn.
