Fun Facts

According to The NonProfit Times when surveyed in 2010, people indicated that they believe that educational nonprofit organizations need the most financial help right now, but more than 50% of the money given to charity by Americans goes to religious organizations.

The keyboard layout as we know it today was invented by Christopher Sholes in 1868. His first typewriters had the letters arranged in alphabetical order but he changed it to the QWERTY arrangement. He contracted with the Remington Arms Company in 1873 to build and market his typewriter. It did not sell well for the first 15 years.

Efficiency. Seems simple enough right? If you look up the definition you may get 3 different explanations:

  1. The state of quality or being efficient.
  2. Accomplishment of or ability to accomplish a job with a minimum expenditure of time and effort.
  3. Effective operation as measured by a comparison of production with cost (as in energy, time, and money. The ratio of the useful energy delivered by a dynamic system to the energy supplied to it.

Does it still seem simple enough? Perhaps not, but it is a word that we hear every day in our businesses and impress upon our employees that they need to be efficient. How do you know if you are efficient within your company? If you think you are efficient because your revenue is good, you may be mistaken. It's definitely a benefit if you have good revenue, but you may still have inefficiencies which are hindering an even larger revenue potential. If you are struggling to hit your revenue goals, then this is a telltale sign that you can be more efficient in your operations.

As a business operates we need to look at our efficiencies on a daily basis to measure our successes. Take some time to review your current software, reports, processes, cross-department communications and workflows to see if they still make sense in your business. You may quickly find out where you can redefine your business to become more efficient.

New Innovations for RFID in 2011

RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) has been the talk of distribution and supply chain since Wal-Mart and the Department of Defense announced that they were going to begin using it over 8 years ago. While it has taken time to spread throughout the industry, mostly due to costs, 2010 will be seen by many as the year that RFID finally started taking off. Over 1 billion EPC (Electronic Product Codes) tags were sold which was over double what was purchased in 2009. While retail might have been the big take off with RFID in 2010, other industries like pharmaceuticals are seeing strong growth.

So what does this all mean? Many technological advancements were seen in 2010, such as off the shelf readers offered in a variety of forms and different price points. Where we once had 2 choices for readers there are now many which increases the adoption rate of RFID at a much faster pace. With this growth there has been an increased interest in investment dollars to RFID research which will help to drive even more advancements in technology and in turn, help to drive costs down and make this technology even more adoptable. In the past 8 years tag prices have come down 10 times in price, read rates of the tags are much more reliable, and the installation of these systems have become more routine. All these signs point to an even further expansion of RFID in 2011. To read more about this growth in RFID, visit SupplyChainBrain.com.

Hidden Wallpaper and Themes in Windows 7

Based upon the language, time zone and currency you chose when installing Microsoft Window 7, that will dictate the wallpaper and themes set for you. Hidden away are some beautiful backgrounds scenery and themes that are actually available to you. Follow these next steps to unlock these treasures:

  1. In the search box in the Start menu, type C:\Windows\Globalization\MCT and press Enter. (Note: If Windows 7 is installed in a drive other than C:, use that letter instead.)
  2. Windows Explorer will launch and show you a list of subfolders under C:\Windows\Globalization\MCT: MCT-AU, MCT-CA, MCT-GB, MCT-US, and MCT-ZA. Each subfolder has wallpapers for a specific country: AU for Australia, CA for Canada, GB for Great Britain, US for the United States, and ZA for South Africa.
  3. For any of the countries whose wallpaper and themes you want to use, go into its Theme folder. Double-click the theme you see there which will install a shortcut to the theme and wallpapers in the Personalization section of Control Panel.

You can now use them as you would any other theme or background, by right-clicking the desktop, choosing Personalize, and choosing a background or theme.

Shake Your Desktop Free of Clutter in Windows 7

During a typical workday it is easy to clutter your desktop with multiple open programs. This can get annoying if you are trying to focus on one particular project, but you don't want to minimize all of the open programs. Windows 7 has a fun little tool that you may not even know was there. Quickly reduce the clutter on your screen by clicking on the title bar of the window you want to keep open, and while still holding the title bar, shake it quickly back and forth until all the other windows minimize to the taskbar, and then let it go. To make them return, shake the title bar again of your active window. Voila! Shake away!

P.S. You can do the same thing by pressing the Window key & Home key, but it is not nearly as fun!
