Blessings this day!  NMIPL is very busy with strategic planning by our great board of directors, advocacy collaborating with other organizations to protect air and water at the NM legislative and at the federal level, presentations and promoting educational events around climate change and eating as a sacred and moral action that everyone can do.

Enjoy the March notes, invite others to get engaged and let us know if we can assist you in your community.

Peace and good,

IPL Cool Harvest Program Launched

Historically, faith communities have fed the less fortunate by organizing food pantries, soup kitchens, and other programs to address hunger. Recently, some have started community gardens, hosted organic farm stands, and even linked up with Community Supported Agriculture (CSAs).

The Cool Harvest program seeks to build on these programs and take them one step further by connecting food to climate.  About one-fifth of global warming pollution comes from the food industry. That's more than from all transportation combined. Cool Harvest is an on-going program that will support congregations interested in being the center of community education, dialog and action around food, faith, and climate.

The Cool Harvest Organizer's Kit, which is available for $10, a 90% discount,  contains everything you need to host a film screening and educate your members about the food, faith, and climate connection. It includes a copy of the short film Nourish, a great primer of the food and climate connection featuring Cameron Diaz, Michael Pollan, and Alice Waters, along with a discussion guide, handouts on lowering your foodprint and Farm Bill advocacy, potluck ideas, tools to help you promote your Cool Harvest events, and much more.Order an organizer's kit today and inspire your congregation to make the connection between food, faith, and climate.

Center for Action Contemplation offers Lenten web-series

Food as Holy Provision and Simple Gift.

Reflections, prayers and actions around food are being offered through the Center for Action and Contemplation throughout the Lenten Season, with a new posting each week. Click on the Lenten link: www.cacradicalgrace.org/lenten/2011/ every Wednesday, beginning with Ash Wednesday, to learn about the sanctity of food and the act of eating. We will explore such questions as "How do we recover the soul of food?"   "How do we build a healthier relationship and become more participatory with our food sources and growers?"  "How can we become more conscious in choices that involve eating?"

Meeting the Cosmic Christ Around the Hearth

March 20, 1:30-4:30 pm, St. Bede's Episcopal Church

1601 S. St. Francis Dr., Santa Fe

Ghost Ranch invites everyone to a series of afternoon conversations to bring our lives to fullness by connecting things that don't seem to be naturally connected.

"Meeting the Cosmic Christ Around the Hearth" is the first in the series and will explore the relationship between Christ and a tomato, between Jesus and an energy efficient light bulb. For nearly 2,000 years Christianity has affirmed that creation occurs in, through, and for the one who is the "first-born of all creation," and that everything holds together in that one who is known to us as Christ. Sister Joan Brown (Franciscan) and Reverend Ken Cuthbertson will be guiding an afternoon of exploration around the connection between Christianity's affirmation of "God-with-us" in Christ and our seeking to live a practical creation-centered spiritual lifestyle in our homes and faith communities.

All are welcome. A $10 donation to defray costs is invited.

Action Needed:
People of Faith Concerned About Coal Fired Power Plant

If you are concerned about Climate Change, the children, the creatures, the future and God's creation addressing pollution from Coal Fired Power Plants is essential.  NMIPL has been engaged in writing letters and testifying at hearings concerning the plants in New Mexico.

We have another opportunity to offer the voice of faith leaders and ordinary people of faith at an EPA hearing on one of the Four Corners Power Plants, March 30 in Farmington.  Please contact Joan if you are interested in organizing letter writing in your community letters or attending and testifying at the hearing.
