From the OnAir CEO

"How much bandwidth is required? This isn't a new discussion - it's been going on since the Internet started.

What we have seen from usage of both Mobile OnAir and Internet OnAir is that people typically use mobile devices - smartphones and tablets as opposed to laptops. The plane's mobile phone network is used far more than WiFi. which means usage is similar to when people are on the move on the ground.

Having said that, we are future-proofing OnAir's products by mapping an upgrade path to provide more bandwidth, on the assumption that there will always be increasing demand.

It is clear that, using Inmarsat's SwiftBroadband, we can meet passengers' needs now and for the foreseeable future. We are currently only using two channels of SwiftBroadband and a further two will soon become available, which will extend SBB's applicability further. However we should not forget that SBB provides a consistent global service, preventing a patchy service.

The second stage of our plan is the use of Global Xpress, Inmarsat's global Ka-band solution. This will become streamin early in 2014. It will provide users with either 30% more throughput or 30% more data volume than a Ku-band solution, for the same price.

We are working to ensure we provide all passengers with the maximum bandwidth and provide a service that is value for money with consistent global delivery."

OnAir Connects Qatar's A350 fleet
Connectivity for 80-strong A350 XWB fleet

OnAir is the first connectivity services provider to be selected as linefit by an A350 operator, following Qatar Airways' decision to deploy both Mobile OnAir and Internet OnAir on its entire A350 fleet. Qatar has already decided to use OnAir's products across its Airbus A320 and Boeing 787 fleets.

It means passengers will be able to use their mobile devices for calls, text messaging, email and mobile Internet, as well as to access inflight WiFi.

Qatar Airways will be Airbus' launch customer for the A350XWB in 2013.

This move marks a continuation in OnAir's strategy for its products to be available as both linefit and retrofit on all major aircraft types, everywhere in the world.

Oman Air Inflight Connectivity Wins Prestigious Award
Passengers Choose Oman Air in APEX Award

Oman Air Pax

The Airline Passenger Experience Association gave Oman Air the award for Best Inflight Connectivity and Communications at the annual APEX Expo in Seattle in September. The winner of the award is voted for by passengers, the people who really experience the service.

Oman Air was the first airline to launch the combined Mobile OnAir and Internet OnAir products, in March 2010.

As part of the voting process, passengers were encouraged to provide feedback about their experience . Typical comments included delight at being able to use their mobile phones and laptops, and compliments on the high quality of the service and ease of use.
