Nothing Is More Powerful Than Vision
"In our work with organizations worldwide, we have observed that the biggest impediment to managers becoming great leaders is the lack of a clear vision..."
Ken Blanchard and Jesse Stoner
Five reasons vision is vital.
- Vision is the starting point of leadership.
- Vision determines direction. Leadership is about going somewhere. If you aren't going somewhere, your leadership style doesn't matter.
- Vision is something to serve. Without vision, the only thing left to serve is yourself. Visionless organizations will eventually be led by self-serving leaders.
- Vision overcomes the power of criticism. Without vision squeaky wheels control organizations.
- Vision creates unity. Without vision you can't get on the same team.
*Ken Blanchard is the man who got the whole leadership ball rolling in the 1980's with his book, The One Minute Manager. Now at age 72, Ken has written a new book titled: Full Steam Ahead! Unleash the power of vision in your work and your life.
A Definition:
Vision is knowing who you are, where you are going, and what will guide your journey.
Vision is the vital extra ingredient for truly satisfying, long-term success. Without a vision, you'll end up reacting rather than acting, and sooner or later you'll get lost. But if you have a compelling vision, you'll be so clear about your purpose, so committed to it, and so sure about your ability to accomplish it that you'll be able to recognize obstacles, take them into account, and press on.
Vision how:
- "The process of creating the vision is as important as what the vision says." Get together with coworkers and work on creating a vision that illustrates purpose. Engagement creates enthusiasm and ownership.
- Define, describe, and practice everyday behaviors that make your vision real today.
- Create support structures. The Lone Ranger had Tonto. Surprisingly, only you can dismantle your walls of aloneness.
- Set goals and create action plans.
