Four Principles of Values-Based Leadership:
  1. Self-reflection. When leaders take the time to reflect on what is important to them and why, they transform activity into productivity.
  2. Balance: The ability to understand all sides of an issue. Facing issues holistically simplifies the world. In addition, action plans become more obvious.
  3. Self-confidence: The ability to see and accept yourself exactly as you are.
  4. Genuine humility: Never forgetting who you are, appreciating the value of each person, and treating everyone respectfully.

A key point:

"Leaders must shift their focus from success to significance."  Values-based leaders go beyond influence to, "... using their influence to pursue what matters."

Simply put, what matters most is the greater good.  From an organizational point of view, a great leadership team helps leaders determine what matters most.

Operationally, the greater good is "the positive change you can effect within a team, department, division, or organization, or even on a global level."  Harry explains that what matters begins with your values and extends to engaging in "making a difference and setting an example." His experience demonstrates that values-based leaders are highly focused decision-makers with less stress in their lives.

Harry's career advice:

  1. Choose opportunities that allow you to grow and learn.
  2. Find places where you can add the most value.
  3. Ask yourself, "Can I have fun here."

Testimonial

Jim Batten and his firm, The Batten Group, were hired to help the Arthritis Foundation fill critically important leadership positions within our Mid Atlantic Region.  We had been experiencing a great deal of trouble recruiting qualified candidates through our normal channels. Within a matter of days after learning of our needs, Jim and his associates began to engage talent in our market areas. A few weeks after the search effort was launched, we were presented with a slate of professionals, all who were highly qualified and currently employed. We hired three candidates presented to us by the Batten Group.

Through the process, the communication, insight and follow-through from Jim and his team were first-rate. Because Jim Batten had a successful non-profit management and fundraising career prior to launching his career in professional search, he has an on-the job perspective that many other search firms do not possess. Therefore, Jim knew exactly the type candidate we needed.

As a 30 year non-profit veteran in management roles across philanthropy, I can write that working with the Batten Group was a pleasant, positive and productive experience; the best executive search team that I have come to know in our business.
