A Tale of CPE in Two Cities:  Not in the Mexico nor the Jamaica Tourists See

By Deryck Durston, M.Div., S.T.M, Associate Director, ACPE

Deryck DurstonIn the June 5, 2011 New York Times I read an in-depth investigative article called "Death by a Thousand Blows."  It reconstructs the story of a mob turning on a Zimbabwean refugee living in one of the larger settlements (squatter camps) outside Johannesburg called Diepsloot.  Here one finds 150,000 people huddled in cardboard and corrugated iron shanties, where even having a small piece of land means having an income as well as a roof, because even the smallest sub-section can be rented out.  Violent crime is high in South Africa. "But it is the impoverished who are most vulnerable to crime, poor people living in the midst of poor criminals.  Under apartheid, the police were enforcers of state repression, and they are yet to be fully trusted as protectors....

Update on Collaboration with CPSP

LANGUAGE ALERT:  CALLING ALL ACPE CENTERS TO CHANGE YOUR LANGUAGE FOR GREATER ACCURACY

In the process of dialogue between ACPE and CPSP a number of complaints from CPSP have been about how ACPE is experienced as "misrepresenting" ourselves by saying "ACPE is accredited by the USDE."  Sometimes this is expressed as "ACPE is recognized by" although there is really no material difference in meaning.

However, since the most accurate statement of all is the following one, ACPE asks its members and accredited centers to use only the following statement from now on about our relationship with the United States Department of Education:  "The ACPE Accreditation Commission is recognized as an accrediting agency by the USDE."

The ACPE/CPSP Collaboration Team is Tim Thorstenson, co-chair; Deryck Durston; Kathy Gallivan and Eugene Robinson.  All ACPE members are invited to bring questions or express concerns to any member of the team.
