Update Marketing Photos for Credibility Is it time to freshen up your head-shots?
It's funny how many agents will tell you that "great photos can make or break an online listing" but don't seem to apply the same thinking to their own professional head-shots on business cards, signs, and agent name riders.
Photos on business cards and signs are a great way to make sure that people associate your name with your face. But if your face of ten years ago doesn't match your face now, are you doing yourself any favors?
There are lots of reasons why agents avoid updating their photos: The hassle of having a new photo taken. Self-consciousness about changes in weight, or age, or even hair loss. Adding an expense to the month when times are hard.
However, younger generations who are extremely used to associating "profile pics" with identities online place a higher premium on the authenticity and currency of photos than generations past. In other words, if you haven't sported four-inch frosted bangs since 1990, now might be a good time to update your marketing photos if you hope to connect with first-time buyers in the "Gen Y" and "Millennials" demographic groups.
Finally, consider having more than one photo you use for marketing materials. As long as you're updating your photos, you might as well have both a "business formal" and "business casual" set done. Depending on the tone and placement of your marketing material, you can then choose to go with the suit versus something more casual. For example, "business formal" might be ideal for your sign panels, while "business casual" could be just the thing for your postcards and email signature.
If you absolutely cannot afford a professional studio session at this time, you might consider looking into a local college's arts program and ask a department head if there are any talented photography students in the program. Not only can you get a reduced rate, but you'll also help a young person build their portfolio.
