Park Academy's small, creative setting helps students struggling with language acquisition discover their giftedness.

New students at Park Academy, a private school on the Marylhurst University campus, can be easy to pick out. Their hood is down over their face. Their posture is slouched over. Their negative attitude toward school is easy to spot.

But their transformation has yet to begin. Read More...

Letter from the Director

Director, Paula Kinney
It's hard to believe the school year is almost over! We've seen such amazing transformation this year in some of our students and we're so excited about the direction the school is taking and we are so grateful to the many people who have contributed to helping make this a pivotal year for our school. Our amazing faculty, generous donors, and hard working parents continue to delight and surprise me!

Gratefully,

Dr. Paula Kinney

Partnership with Amy Roloff Charity Foundation
100 Backpacks of FUN for Haitian Refugee Children

On January 12, 2010 a magnitude 7.0 earthquake struck just outside of Port-au-Prince, the capital city of Haiti. It is currently believed that more than 230,000 people were killed as a direct result of the earthquake and over one million are displaced, making Haiti the largest refugee camp in the world. Haiti's population of orphans was over 400,000 prior to the quake; one can only imagine how many
vulnerablAmy Roloff Charity Foundatione children there are now.

Park Academy is partnering with The Amy Roloff Charity Foundation  to bring some joy to refugee children. Students will be collecting donations to fill 100 Backpacks of FUN.

Students recently enjoyed a surprise visit by two special guests. Amy Roloff from Little People, Big World came and visited our school to tell us about her foundation and how she is trying to help kids around the world - and specifically in Haiti, and Dondi Kathman, who has just returned from Haiti, shared about the conditions there. Students engaged in a lively brainstorming session about items that could be useful to donate.

Those ideas are being discussed by the foundation and we will soon have a final list of items families can donate. We hope you will participate in helping our students help kids be kids! More information will follow.

Visit www.amyroloffcharityfoundation.orgto watch a short video about Haiti. Cash donations can be given through the Website.

More information will follow about how you can be involved.

Park Academy Awarded $20,000 Music Lab Funding
Formal Announcement at Ten Grands Event

On Saturday, April 3, Park Academy Founder, Piper Park and Program Director Bill Westphal attended the spectacular Ten Grands musical event at the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall. Piper and Bill stepped onto the hauntingly beautiful set of Ten Grands and formally acknowledged a $20,000 donation for Park Academy's Music Lab. The SSet of Ten Grandsnowman Foundation donated $10,000, matched by the Joyce Furman Charitable Foundation donation of $10,000. Dr. Keith Cheng contributed the final $1,000 to make the budget for this new project.

Because of this generous gift, students at Park Academy will soon be learning MIDI Technology. The goal of the Music Program at Park Academy is to prepare music students to be knowledgeable and proficient in performance and music technology through the use of "music instrument digital interface." MIDI is a technology that makes creating, playing, or just learning about music easier and more rewarding. In order to allow for more creativity and innovation, students will even be able to design their own digital musical instruments. The MIDI Music Technology Lab will also have state-of-the art software that allows students to access their learning at their own pace. Instructors will have the ability to customize student needs without compromising the classroom performance experience. The skills learned through the Music Lab and MIDI Technology will serve students well as they progress to higher education and jobs. The new Music Lab should be in place by the beginning of the next school year!
