Greetings!

Happy New Year!  The kids are going back to school and the holiday decorations are almost put away.  Time to get out the calendar and make sure you are taking care of YOU.  Schedule your annual exam, mammogram, haircut, massage, a yoga class...whatever it takes to take care of yourself. Recharge your batteries so you have the energy for family, work, or play.

How about a little jog and a bowl of oatmeal?  Check out the 16th Annual Quaker Oatmeal Festival and 5K Walk/Run on January 14, 2012 in Lafayette, CO.  For more information, see the Lafayette Chamber of Commerce website here.

As of January 10, Dr. Long and Dr. Gallagher are available for early morning appointments (limited to start).  If you need to get your exam done and get on with your day, call for one of their early time slots.

Enjoy the beach scene above.  Maybe it's wishful thinking...winter is here for awhile.

Sincerely,

The Women's Health Group

We 'heart' Our Babies
Did you know that many birth defects can be prevented?  The first step is taking care of yourself before you get pregnant.  Once pregnant, avoid cigarettes and alcohol as if your baby's life depends on it---because it does.  Get routine
care during your pregnancy and follow your doctor's
orders.  Simple, thorough, hand washing will help prevent many infections that could affect your unborm baby.

Genetic testing is optional and does not guarantee a perfect baby.  Speak with your obstetrician
for advice about risk factors and genetic testing.

January is National Birth Defects Prevention Month.  This year, The National Birth Defects Prevention Network is focusing on heart defects.  For more information, check out this fact sheet: Maternal Steps to Help Prevent Heart Defects.  For National Birth Defects Prevention Network, follow this link: www.nbdpn.org

The Women's Health Group offers optional genetic testing.  Some tests are screening and noninvasive; others are diagnostic but require an invasive procedure.
For more information on our genetic testing, follow this link.

Guard Her with Gardasil
Group of female studentsJanuary is the month dedicated to Cervical Health
Awareness.  Have you considered the Gardasil vaccination for your daughter?  We recommend the vaccine for females between the ages of 9 and 26.  This vaccine will protect against certain subtypes of HPV that could eventually cause cervical cancer.  Even though 9 years old seems young to be considering HPV, the vaccine is most effective prior to any exposure.  Even if there has been HPV exposure, the vaccine may still offer some protection for further exposure.

Young boys and men, ages 9-26, may benefit from the Gardasil vaccination for protection against genital warts, which could possibly infect their future partners with HPV.

Ask your doctor about the Gardasil vaccination series (3 shots over six months).  Your pediatrician or family doctor can discuss your son's risk factors and the vaccine.  The Women's Health Group will gladly discuss your daughter's risk factors and the vaccination.  Check out our educational information here.

Monthly glimpses at the patient benefits of electronic health records

Health care reform is taking hold in many shapes.  Electronic Computer mouse
access to parts of your own medical record is part of the movement.  We have adopted an electronic health record system that will allow us to forward your lab results and visit summaries via secure email.

In order to take advantage of this benefit, you-the patient-must be registered in our patient portal on our website.  We still have a few pieces to put into place, however, use this time to create an account in our patient portal. Go to www.whg-pc.com and click on CREATE AN ACCOUNT.  In just a few minutes, you will have completed the process.  If you have a patient portal account with another physician's office through HealthKey, you can use your same login information on our portal.  If you have a HealthKey login already, but cannot remember your password, you will have to contact that doctor's office for help.

Don't be left out!  Create your account and be ready for the next wave of technology and your health care.
