Greetings!
Back to school already? Didn't we just plan graduations and promotions? Life is about to ramp up again, getting ready for the new school year. What about your child's lunch? School lunches are getting celebrity makeovers across the country, cutting fat, sugars, and additives. You can control what your child eats by packing their lunch (and why not make one for yourself as well?). Martha Henze, a registered dietitian, shares her easy-to-follow tips for healthy brown-bagging.
Will your savings account get hit with school shopping? Now is the time to consider the consignment stores. They are loaded with bargains and you can add to the basics without breaking the bank. We recently asked our Facebook friends for their consignment store favorites. We listed a few of them below. One of them even offered our FABULOUS fEMAIL readers a 20% discount this month!
August is Immunization Awareness Month. Children need their vaccines, but don't forget, adults need them as well! This month, we discuss whooping cough (pertussis). What starts out as a 'cold', might actually be a vicious bacterial infection and babies are extremely vulnerable.
Sincerely,
The Women's Health Group 303-280-2229/303-665-6016

Brown Bagging a Healthy Lunch |
Packing a healthy lunch is a great way to manage the foods your child consumes during that long school day. You control the fat, sugar, caffeine and additives. But where to start? Involve your family-let them pick a funky fruit or odd vegetable at the store and they may be willing to try something new. Cookie cutters make great shapes out of cheese, bread or tortillas. Get a 'cool' insulated lunchbag to keep the Greek yogurt, a sandwich, or salad cold. Laptoplunches.com sells bento boxes with colorful containers and sections for food and snacks. Their website has great lunchtime ideas and recipes. Check out EcoLunchBoxes ("Healthy for People and the Planet")for stainless steel options and beautiful batik-type sacks. Their website discusses the excessive waste in disposable products-this company will appeal to the 'green' in you! Martha Henze of Traveling Taste Buds, LLC, shared a few healthy lunch tips with us. If anyone knows how to pack a great lunch, it's Martha. Her masters degree in nutrition and registered dietitian status is the background for her nutritional counseling (one on one and seminars). Martha enjoys translating scientific nutritional research into practical and applicable methods that apply to our every day lives. For Martha's ideas on a printable page, click here. |
School shopping can be overwhelming to you AND your savings account. We recently asked our Facebook friends for their favorite consignment stores. Think of it as buying clothing and toys to be 'twice-loved' in your home. If your child sprouted up a few inches this year, you might want to consider selling their old clothes. Most shops take gently-used clothing and toys, then re-sell to be twice-loved and you get store credit or cash, depending on the store policy. Think how good you will feel about this special type of recycling. Once Upon a Child, Arvada 303-427-5437 (There are multiple locations throughout Colorado) Second Hand Kids 303-255-1955 (Tonia recently moved the store to a new location across the street in the Albertson's shopping center.) Kid to Kid, Aurora 303-752-2757 Located at Mississippi and Chambers near Michael's craft store. Todd, the owner, is extending a special FABULOUS fEMAIL 20% discount for the month of August. Just mention FABULOUS fEMAIL. (No other offers will apply with this discount.) Just Between Friends A twice-yearly 'event' sale for kids gear and clothing. Located at 4655 Humboldt Street, Denver, 80216. The next event is Sept 25-Oct 1.

What's all the Hoopla about Whooping Cough? |
|
Whooping cough (pertussis) is a very contagious bacterial infection. Babies are especially vulnerable. Babies need their vaccines, but adults should stay current too! Protect those children you love so much!
Whooping cough typically starts out with common cold symptoms, progressing to severe coughing that can lead to vomiting, cracked ribs or even a hernia. Yes, the coughing can be that intense! For more information, see our article here.

Monthly glimpses at the patient benefits of electronic health records |
GBS Recalls. No, you don't have to return anything to the store because it is defective. Our electronic 'recall' system reminds us when our pregnant moms need a GBS test. GBS (Group B Streptococcus) is bacteria that could be passed on to your baby during delivery. GBS infection can lead to meningitis, pneumonia, and other diseases in your newborn. Our pregnant moms are tested for GBS between weeks 35 and 37 with a swab. If the swab confirms the presence of GBS, you will have antibiotic therapy during labor and delivery (unless you have a planned cesarean delivery and it is done before your labor starts and water breaks). For the whole article, please click here. With electronic health records, we are able to focus on caring for you, our patient, and not spend our time sorting through pages of paperwork looking for a reminder, a note, or test results. You can rest assured knowing we are ordering appropriate tests in a timely manner and prescribing treatment as indicated to keep you and your baby healthy. |
