Greetings!

Picnics, fireworks, and baseball games highlight July.  It is probably no coincidence that Eye Injury Prevention Month is here as well.  According to eyeSmart.org (American Academy of Ophthalmology), more than 40% of eye injuries are related to sports or recreational activities.  More than 40% were caused in the home doing repairs, yardwork, cleaning, and cooking.  Be smart, use eye protection, and insist your children use protective goggles for sports.  And don't forget the sunglasses.  Eyes can suffer from sun exposure too!

Is there a topic you would like to see discussed in a future newsletter?  Please drop us a note at info@whg-pc.com.  We would love to hear from you!

Have a safe and healthy holiday weekend!  Just a reminder...our offices will be closed on Monday, July 4th.  Please call the office to be connected to the physician on call.

Sincerely,

The Women's Health Group

Know Your ABC's...

or Your PMS and PMDD

Chocolate heartPMS and PMDD aren't just alphabet soup.  They are very real conditions with different timing and characteristics.  PMS affects more than 30% of the female population, while PMDD affects about 8%.

It's easy to blame our cranky days on PMS, but you may need a physician to determine if you are suffering from PMDD, the more serious form of PMS.  It is helpful to keep a journal or log of your physical and emotional symptoms.  If you see a trend in sync with your cycle after a few months, check with your doctor.  Many women feel better just knowing they are not alone with emotions that could run rampant at anytime (fireworks are over by July 5th!).  Oftentimes, relaxation techniques help (Yoga, meditation, massage, a bubble bath, anyone?), but some women may require lifestyle modifications and/or medication.

Don't hesitate to ask your doctor about PMS and PMDD.  And remember.....a little chocolate might help too!  For more information on PMS and PMDD, please click here.

Is Implanon Right for You?
With so many birth control choices available, where do you start?  Ideally, this is a conversation to have with your physician, but it helps to do a little research on your own and decide what forms of birth control may fit your lifestyle.  The physicians at The Women's Health Group offer contraceptive counseling to assist in that big decision.  One of the options offered here is Implanon, a small matchstick size rod placed under the skin of your arm.  This lasts for three years and is highly effective.  For more information, please click here.  For details from the Implanon website, click here.

Check out our comprehensive birth control comparison chart here.

Are you experiencing information overload when you visit the bookstore looking for some parenting advice?  Our own Dr. Gallagher shared her list of favorites here.

As always, when seeking information online or at the bookstore, find credible resources and when in doubt, check with your physician (family doctor, obstetrician, or pediatrician) for the final word of advice.  And remember,  it never hurts to ask an experienced mom or grandma!  They must know something...look how great YOU turned out!

Monthly glimpses at the patient benefits of electronic health records

Keeping track of necessary testing has been streamlined with the introduction of electronic health records.

Our electronic records alert us to which pregnant moms are eligible to receive the Rhogam injection due to their Rh negative status.  A message is attached to your record alerting the physician if you are Rh-.  The alert stays on your record until we document the administration of the Rhogam.  For more information on Rhogam , check out our information, click here.
