Greetings!
January starts a new year and a new decade. This month is also National Cervical Health Awareness Month. As you make your 2010 resolutions, please add Pap smear to your list. Guidelines have changed over the years, so check with your physician and if indicated, make that appointment.
Speaking of cervical health, the Gardasil vaccine is recommended for females ages 9-26. This vaccine will help protect against four types of HPV, two of which can cause cervical cancer. A few of your common questions are answered in the article below. You can schedule your appointment with us for the vaccine in our Lafayette and Thornton offices. For more information about Gardasil, click here.
Is your family complete? Are you ready for permanent solution to birth control? Maybe you are considering Essure, a very successful method of permanent sterilization. The physicians at The Women's Health Group have advanced training in the Essure micro-insert placement. If you are ready to discuss permanent birth control options, make an appointment with one of our physicians. They will help you make an informed decision that will fit your needs and lifestyle.
Sincerely,
The Women's Health Group 303-280-2229/303-665-6016

~ASK YOUR GYNECOLOGIST~
Q: What is HPV?
A: Human Papilloma Virus-there are over 100 types and often people who are affected are asymptomatic (no symptoms). However, HPV can be easily transmitted by genital contact.
Q: I have two daughters-my youngest is 15 years old and not sexually active and my oldest is 25. Should they be vaccinated?
A: Yes. Gardasil is indicated for females ages 9-26 years old. Gardasil is most effective when administered before a child is sexually active and has not yet been exposed to any types of HPV (Human Papilloma Virus). However, the majority of sexually active people have been exposed to HPV but at this time it is not possible to identify the exact types to determine if they would benefit from the vaccine. Luckily, most people are not infected by all four types found in the vaccine and would still benefit from Gardasil.
Q: What is Gardasil?
A: Gardasil is a vaccine that protects against four types of HPV that cause the majority of cervical cancers, genital warts, and precancerous cervical/vaginal lesions. Q: How is Gardasil administered?
A: Gardasil is given as a series of three injections at 0, 2, and 6 months apart.
Q: Are there side effects to the vaccine?
A: Gardasil is generally very well-tolerated and the side effects are rare. It is available through pediatrician and gynecologist offices.
Q: Do I still need a Pap smear?
A: Yes! Gardasil is protective against four types of HPV which are responsible for the majority of the cervical cancers and genital warts, however it does not provide complete protection from these diseases.
