ABOUT MERCE CUNNINGHAM
Merce Cunningham was an American dancer and choreographer best known for his isolated movement, development of "chance dance", and long list contributions to the field. He was a soloist and performed with Martha Graham's dance company from 1940 until 1955. He presented his first works in 1942 and formed his own dance company in 1953. He created innovative dances using the music of numerous avant-garde composers, including John Cage. He created nearly 200 dance pieces for his company and danced in all of them until he reached the age of 70. Cunningham is considered an American treasure. Cunningham is widely considered one of the world's greatest choreographers and one of the most influential trailblazers in modern dance. He is especially known for his collaborations with American artists, including Andy Warhol, Robert Rauschenberg and Jasper Johns. His later dances include Locale and Duets (both 1980); Fabrications (1987); Trackers (1991), the first work he created with the aid of a computer; Crwdspcr (1994); Installations (1996); Scenario (1997); Biped (1999), which uses motion-capture technology; Way Station (2001); Split Sides (2003), with music by the experimental rock bands Radiohead and Sigur Ros; Xover (2007); and Nearly Ninety (2009).
