Health Planning Council Kicks Off Concussion Study

Over 17 members of Northeast Florida's diverse medical community came together this afternoon to discuss the Health Planning Council's new youth sport-related concussions study.  The Health Planning Council convened a regional group in St. Augustine and spent about two hours developing and tweaking four solid research questions.

1. What is the incidence and prevalence of sport-related concussions for children between the ages of 10-18 presenting in emergency rooms in Northeast Florida Acute Care hospitals between the years 2004-2009?

2.  What is the admission rate of sport-related concussions for children between the ages of 10-18 presenting in emergency rooms in Northeast Florida Acute Care hospitals between the years 2004-2009?

3.  Is there a difference between hospital admissions, discharges, length of stay, and payer source associated with concussions for children between the ages of 10-18 presenting in an emergency room in Northeast Florida Acute Care hospitals between the years 2004-2009?

4.  What is the utilization rate for neuro-imaging (i.e. CT scans) for children between the ages of 10-18 presenting in emergency rooms in Northeast Florida Acute Care hospitals between the years 2004-2009?

The members of the study group also developed the study's design & methodology process as well as identified reliable and accessible data sources.  The study group will meet every other month over the next 10 months to attempt to answer the four agreed upon research questions.   Findings of the study will be released in October 2011 at the Health Planning Council's Annual Meeting.
