Last year over 200 community leaders from Northeast
Florida attended the Health Planning Council of Northeast Florida's first-ever
annual luncheon. We brought together hospital and nursing home
executives, city/county elected officials, health planners, public health
administrators, community health center executives, regional health information
offices (RHIO), elected officials, chambers of commerce, regional funding
entities, and representatives from the Florida Department of Health and the
Agency for Health Care Administration.
Our 2nd Annual Health Planning Council
luncheon is slated for Thursday, October 21, 2010 from 11:00am-2:00pm at the
Marriott Southpoint in Jacksonville, Florida. We are anticipating over 250 attendees
at this year's meeting. Our key note
speaker will be Mr. Dan Burden, CEO of Walkable and Livable Communities
Inc. Mr. Burden's two day visit to
Northeast Florida will start with his keynote address on addressing how the
Health Planning Council, economic development councils, city/county planning
departments, transportation planning organizations, healthcare systems, public
health and regional planning councils can address health issues in their
strategic vision and plans. On Friday, October 22, Mr. Burden will lead a
½ day workshop that will focus on assessing the built environment of a
particular community in Northeast Florida. This workshop will include:
·
A look at current policy, practices and
achievements as they relate to individual and community health.
·
A discussion with attendees to understand
policy, projects and to assess project scheduling.
·
A review of the HPC's regional and local
initiatives with a focus on possibilities, challenges and prioritizing events.
·
An introduction to the principles of Smart
Growth and Living Streets. This will include correct road dimensions, urban
design, transportation planning, streetscaping, amenities, circulation and
network with an emphasis on active community environments.
·
A review of best practices with examples of
relevant walkability and livability design features and policies available from
around the world.
·
A Walking Audit in which participants will tour
areas with Dan. This audit will provide participantswith the opportunity to
assess the street conditions, motorists' behaviors, and pedestrian and
bicyclist challenges on-site and to prepare participants to discuss
opportunities and constraints. Participants then work in small groups to
address and solve problems with new tools.
·
A discussion on improving interagency
facilitation with a focus on core projects, ways to encourage pedestrians and
bicyclists, and ways to collaborate both within and across agencies.
In addition to this very exciting two day tour with
Mr. Burden, we are offering a new opportunity to our regional stakeholders at
this year's annual luncheon.
