October 22, 2010: Start investing in Northeast Florida
The Health Planning Council of Northeast Florida welcomes keynote speaker, Dan Burden, CEO and President of the Livable and Walkable Communities Institute for their 2010 Annual Meeting. Dan Burden is an internationally recognized authority on livable and sustainable communities, healthy streets, traffic calming, and bicycle and pediestrian programs. Dan will discuss the health impacts of the built environment, programs, best practices, active community environments, implemeation strategies and interagency coordination.
According to Trust for America's Health (2008), it concluded that an investment of $10 per person per year in proven community-based programs to increase physical activity, improve nutrition, and prevent smoking and other tobacco use could save the country more than $16 billion annually within five years. This is a return of $5.60 for every $1. Communities can begin this process by investing in livable and walkable communities. A community's built environment includes all of the physical parts of where we live and work (e.g., homes, buildings, streets, open spaces, and infrastructure). The built environment influences a person's level of physical activity. For example, inaccessible or nonexistent sidewalks and bicycle or walking paths contribute to sedentary habits. These habits lead to poor health outcomes such as obesity, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and some types of cancer (CDC, 2010).
