Winter MarketsWinner Announced! 

 

The winner is - SUSAN KELLY!  Those who attended the Harvest New England Conference in Sturbridge last week were able to enter our drawing for 4 tickets to the 2011 Topsfield Fair.  We were happy to see some of our farmers there! 

Winter MarketsAnnual Winter Conference

for Educators

Massachusetts Agriculture in the Classroom is sponsoring a Statewide Winter Conference for teachers at the Paul R. Baird Middle School in Ludlow, MA on Saturday, March 12th from 8:30am to 3:30pm.  Titled "Growing Minds Through Massachusetts Agriculture," the conference offers educational and networking resources, activity ideas and framework connections that can facilitate and enhance pre-K through 12th grade classroom teachers alike and help bring agriculture to the classroom.  This year's conference will feature a choice of 6 concurrent workshops during each of 4 workshop sessions. 
 The $50 fee includes lunch and all materials ($55 on the day of the conference).  For further information, please visit Massachusetts Agriculture in the Classroom.

Gloucester / Cape Ann Farmers' Market is moving!

 

The Gloucester/Cape Ann Farmers' Market is moving to a new home - Stage Fort Park.  The market will open its 5th season on June 30th and will run through October 13th on Thursdays from 3-6:30pm. This is a good move - plenty of parking, a playground, and inside restrooms - all the things we didn't have downtown.  For further information please visit Cape Ann Farmers' Market.

Tomato Seedlings

 

Tomatoes are among Verrill Farms' most popular crops and seed selection starts early for both the varieties grown at the farm and the seedlings which gardeners will buy and plant in backyards and pots this spring.  Seedlings come in 2"-3" pots and the cost is $3 each.  They must be ordered and paid for by April 2nd.  Pick up is May 21st-31st.  For more information visit Verrill Farm.

Ever think about growing a Bonsai tree?

 

From March to August, Bonsai West of Littleton is offering classes from beginners to masters for growing bonsai trees.   You will learn the history of Bonsai and also the care of maintenance of these beautiful specimens and will learn the basic steps of bonsai design.  The classes have multiple sessions.  For further information, please visit Bonsai West.

Mass Aggie Seminars is a series of educational programs for home gardeners, landscape managers, and beginning farmers.  Many of those seminars will be held in our area in March and April and the topics range from apples to wildflowers to weeds. 

March 19th - Managing Weeds Organically in the Home Landscape,   Topsfield

March 26th - Wildflowers for Beginners, Topsfield

April 16th - Backyard Apple Orchard Fruiting Wall, Tougas Family Farm, Northborough

Calling all new farmers!Sheepshearing Festival!

 
Gore Place in Waltham is hosting their 24th Annual Sheepshearing Festival on Saturday, April 30th from 10am to 5pm.  Shearing will be done 2 ways - the old technique by hand and the modern way. There will be sheep herding, crafters, live music, demonstrations, wagon rides and much more.  This is an outdoor event and it will happen rain or shine.  Adults are $15 and children 12 & under are free - FREE PARKING.  For more information visit Gore Place.
